Someone to modify a factory wood stock

Are there any shops that will modify wood stocks by adding material? For what it would cost me to get the tools (saws/router) to do it, it's just not worth it.

I would like to have the narrow sporter forend on my LH Rem. 581 (rimfire)
modified into more of a beaver tail forend with a little drop down in the belly for shooting offhand like the McMillan Baker Special.

I have found plenty of posts where individuals have done it for themselves.
What I haven't seen is reference to any shops that will do it for a fee.

Anyone know of anywhere that will do this?
Thank you,
-Rick

A word of advice - make sure you and the guy who does the work are using the term "beaver tail" to mean precisely the same thing. A good drawing or photo of what you want to achieve often works pretty well. I've had some experience with special orders where an orange in the eye of the person placing the order looks like an apple in the eye of the guy doing the work. ;)

Thank you for the link. I sent him an email inquiry.

...and he said, "No can do".

Anybody else know of anyone? She needs some work...

Perhaps Doug would take on the task:

Richards Microfit lists the Remington model 581 on their action inletting list. If you dont mind doing the stock finish work, you could get a real nice walnut or laminate stock from them at a very affordable price.

Looked like the 581 inletting option has about an 8 week turn around time though.

They do have a few stocks that look like they would fit the bill and I will admit not knowing they inlet for the 581. Mine being left handed,
I don't know if that would make a difference or not (I could ask them not to cut the bolt notch if it's a "righty" inlet).

That said, have they gotten any better recently? I can't say I've EVER seen anything positive written about them or their stocks. I don't
go looking but, virtually every review I've seen in the past regarding both their stocks and service have been extremely negative. Which is too bad
because their silhouette stock is very tempting.

I guess I'll go searching around for current reviews. I'm not in any great hurry, I could wait for a stock to be done. It's shootable as is.
Thanks for the heads-up.

For what you pay, they are very good stocks. Most of the bad reviews are due to peoples complaints of having to do extra inletting work on them.

They are NOT drop in ready stocks, never have been. No such thing as a drop in stock that will fit every type of a particular action. If you only do 98-99% inletting, then you can make a perfect fit because its a lot easier to remove wood than grow it back ;)
Just have to go into it knowing that you will probably have to tweak some inletting, do a decent amount of sanding and apply the finish coat or oil. None if it is hard work. I look at it as a blank slate that is 95% complete. I can lower my comb if I want, flatten the fore arm, grind in finger grooves on the pommel, etc...

For under $200 you get a pretty good piece of wood IMO. Just gotta be willing to do some work.
