Needing someone to Auto Clear Coat a Stock

Ha guys. I have a Benchrest style laminated wood stock and I need someone to put a clear coat on it for me. The stock is new and does not have any finish on it , it has been sanded but I do not know if it is ready to shoot. I have emailed a few people about it and they do not do this or they did not get back to me. Can someone lead me in the right direction or shoot this stock the next time they do one? I would like it done right and look like glass. I have talked to some of the body shops around here but nobody that I talked to wanted to mess with it. I was thinking about doing it myself till I went to NAPA and they told me what it was going to cost & I was going to have to buy a qt. each of the 2 part mix. I hope some can help. :'(

Thanks
Lefty Lucas

Sounds like another after deer season closes job for me to do....
PM me your phone number and a good time to talk about doing this...

Well to start if you have not already. Contact preacher! I have had more than one guy on this site tell me That he is "Good to GO". Only other option that I can suggest from my own experince is to contact Bill Shehane. He is a great guy. He does things right. He will be straight up with you and do what needs to be done! Not sure what he would charge to do a stock that isn't one of his? But he gets $275 to auto clear coat a stock. Most likely his work will consist of 8 to 9 coats sanding between each one. Mine came out like glass! My wife would probably be a happier woman if I treated her with the care I do this stock lol! Bill is a little slow, but it's because he is swamped with work! He does make his deadlines tho! If he tells you 90days, it will be done in 90days and sometimes a little quicker! Like I said tho! from what a cpl have told me about (preacher's work) That wouldn't be a bad option either! And that info does come from reliable sources!

Thats bull pucky, I have been doing auto body paint for 45 years, in the old days of laquer that was possible, todays clear you can spray 3 coats and sand and buff in 6 hours, looks like glass and will last many lifetimes on a gunstock. The price is on par. ed

re turnred: i have a custom furniture shop and have been auto clear coating for a long time .also clear gun stocks. new materials and high solids make a 3 coat job as glass. and it chemical cures so it is very fast. in my opinion 275 is cheap .

3 coats will work out great on fiberglass and the synthetics, but the laminates normally have to many voids in them and unless you use a filler you will need more than 3 coats to level it out.. I use a minimum of 6 coats usually and at times I've used more depending on the outcome.... I've quit using fillers after a few problems... and now I just keep spraying and block sanding until it's where I want it to be...

i use vynal sanding sealer under the clear. it does require several coats to fill pores but sands much easier than the clear. it also gives the clear something to stick to. also if wou want pearls in the clear it need more coats.

Preacher, You are exactly right, most all laminates have voids along the edges of the seams, and require more time and material. ed

I was not saying the price was to high, i questioned the 9 coats, the preachers way of sanding down to fill the voids is fine because he is removing material as he works, the more you put on the better chance of what we call checking, this is when paint gets built up too thick and starts checking [ really fine cracks and checks all over] all paint shrinks over time, the newer activated clears reduced the chance by miles. ed
