Some random ramblings

I've been down the same path a couple of times myself. Many would consider it a waste of time and resources, but I always want to understand exactly WHY something doesn't work well.
Sure, both of us could have waited until we could afford a custom rifle built by someone else that shot bugholes and learned nothing except perhaps to rely on the work and experience of others.
Nothing wrong with that. But I want to learn things. Not just repeat things others have learned.
Keep on keepin' on. That's what I'll be doing.

Thanks for the story. I enjoyed reading it.
Exactly! Idk why but I love trying to figure out why or I'm constantly wondering " well what if I do this , or that...mabye they don't try this ?"
Gets to the point I have people saying they wanna teach me and I feel like I need to give them a warning :D Guess I like the ride more then the destination

Yes, it did it so much during load development that I just came to accept it. But even so, once I got the magic load, it didn't matter, because both groups were still under 1/2 inch. (Very annoying to a guy who shoots expensive rifles that only shoot 1/2 inch!)
Any idea what the reason could be ?

Well I guess you have to identify what's accurate to each person. Not sure what critter I hunt that I'd realistically need a 1/4" shooting gun for when I really think about it....at least in the way I hunt right now. Don't get me wrong , I'd be ticked pink with a gun that shot in the 0's but I mean the kill zone on most animals is pretty big even those super special "kill switch shots" are usually less then 3".
I mean I still feel you should strive for the best you can. And the guys I see at the range shooting a 6" group @ 100yd and calling it good for the deer woods make me cringe....but..... I think we all need to ask at what point is it really good ? Mabye if I was going after prairie dogs out to 600yd it would be a problem but ..... Hmmm and I'm rambling again :D
You do realize you're posting this on a benchrest/long range shooting competition site, right?

These guys will duke it out for 3 pages over the necessary of primer pocket uniformity.

:D o trust me I know , honestly it's a nice change of pace for me. I'm usually the guy twitching their eye listening to somone tell me how all they need is pie plate accuracy, guess I'm that guy now :D

Now........be kind. We have a kid that’s “hooked”. We just need to carefully reel him in. If we do this right, in five years he’ll be a “full length sizing every time” guy. We can’t let the “neck sizing “ guys have him. Think about the future of the sport!

I think it has to do with lock up, two piece stock, possibly hammer fall.

Some say it is the forearm/barrel relationship. I did some research back then and all of these were proposed and talked about. It was at least 25 years ago and I do not recall now because once I got it shooting under half inch (really three shots in 1/4) I said "gud'nuf" and never gave it another thought. It was my friend's rifle and he couldn't shoot 1/2 inch anyhow.

I didn't try to overcome the double group because once I found a load that shot (again, 40 grain vmax, varget (I recall it was a compressed load that just filled the case) and a fed GM primer...don't recall OAL but it is in my notes, as mentioned buried right now) I didn't worry about the double group. It was and remains a groundhog smacker.

I suggest you google-fu and look for HR handi rifle accuracy threads from back in about that time. I think Bellm and another guy were pretty active at that time doing accuracy work with modified break barrel actions.
