So you think you may want to try long range Benchrest?

No they are not wrong for dong what they want to do.. I never said they were wrong. However, whatever discipline they shoot in they need to abide by the rules. If they just want to shoot there is plenty of "room" for that too! OR they may even decide to start a loose form of some competition so they can shoot and somehow keep score. That is entirely up to them and there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of it. BUT I was just saying that with many people, competition IS the driving force..
It looks like the competive shooter are getting fewer each year . When I shot ATA trap we had 4200 shooters this year was less then 1000 . We also shot $400.00 guns
Now the are $ 10.000 plus . Larry

Larry, do me a favor and please stay off my threads. Your opinions about competitive shooting are well known and do not help the sport in any way. I can only hope you do not show up and spread your cancer at the 600yd matches at Manatee. All sports of any kind have rules. You continue to spread lies to push your agenda, which has always been anti-BR . There is no difference in cost to build a 17lb rifle vs a heavy gun. Actually a heavy heavy gun with its dedicated rest will cost far more. If you dont have anything positive to add then stay away. There are a lot of shooting sports, this particular thread is about longrange Benchrest.

You are exactly right. I'm scared shitless about this fly match. Groups/ scores being published...

I'd better hide all of my barrel engravings as to not embarrass more than myself.

Don't forget Dr Martin's 600yd shoot in Huntsville starting again this winter (I hope).
You cant embarrass me, just try it. LOL

Watching him set the bags, getting the rifle running straight and then firing fast to get the same condition says enough.
The left feed, right eject custom action ran like a sewing machine. Don't have the $$$ to play that game and be competitive but I can damn sure appreciate it!
You can be competitive with a trued Rem and a custom barrel by a good gunsmith. It is getting the gun to work and track. They can win there fair share. Also in 1000 yard BR there are two winners, one for score and one for group. Matt

LOL, that's one of the reasons I'm not as interested in bench rest, you guys don't shoot enough.
You can shoot 80 rounds a weekend. Like Alex said and after weeks of loading competitively I wouldn't want to load anymore. Matt

I set a couple group agg records using a right bolt, right port. No dual port. You do not have to machine gun, but it can help in the right conditions.

I don't enjoy loading any more either but sure do like to shoot. 70 rounds a day with sighters of F class is an enjoyable amount of shooting. I rarely get to shoot 2 days in a row due to family so I need to get it done in one day.
One of these days I'll get around to trying bench rest. I just upgraded my rest to a JJ and have a nice 17 pound BRX just sitting there. The problem is I've never found a shooting discipline that wasn't fun!

My buddy shoots Reade range 1000 yard BR and they shoot 2 matches a day plus the shootoffs. He wins almost all his relays so it is two matches and two shootoffs, so he shoots 80 rounds a day. Matt

I have to respond
I don't lie And my friend you accused doesn't . Here is a few cancer thing I have done .
I was one of the first members the gun club had 1972 . The range had a small berm with a wood bench . For pistol and rifle .
My game was shooting trap .
4 or 5 of Built a base for a trap and a take down house the range had no power so a generator was taken . In a few months we had 20 or more shooting. With the help of the shooters and the county . Put up lights and a permanent trap house
We shot thursday nights 30 plus shooting .
My son and I shot several years . He was the sub jr champion 3 years 2 years jr champion he was top 10 in the nation in jr class the last year he shot .
We went from guns to stock cars
We built race cars and help the sport grow . Many I helped I never charged anything .
Went back to shooting after my son married.
3 or5 of started the balloon shoot We got it up to 10 or more Went to clay bird got a draw a few more shooters . The range was improved to 1000 yd . The only gun smith was getting old .
After going to gun smith school I was looking for a place to put my lathe . I had furnished many of guns so others could try our sport . The lathe ended up at Erick house . He ended chambering barrels for savage . The sport went from 7 to over 20 at every shoot . We had guns that was almost rail guns . The only gun that I can think of That dominated the shoot was mine
Jerry shot it . He won all but two shoots .
It looks like I have done more for shooting then anyone one .
I know you had no problem decreasing from 20 plus to 7 .
Any person that would like hear my lies IM me
I can't say for sure but if it wasn't for me you would be still twisting wrenches . Larry

Yes Larry you have done more for shooting than anyone, whatever you say. As far a twisting wrenches goes, you sure are full of your self. That may be true though, I learned alot from you. What not to do. Your so far gone you dont seem to know when your lying and when your not.
Another potentially positive thread muddied up by Savagedasher.

The biggest attraction a new shooter has to come to a Benchrest match is you can guarantee Larry wont be there! :)

To be clear...trap shooting has died because the grumpy old men that the sport has become. The other reason...sporting clays and 5 stand, there is a new sheriff in town. Plain and simple...that is the only reason you don't see trap shooting thrive.

I'm not getting into the manhood measuring but comparing all shooting to trap isn't a good comparison....and rifles and shotgun folks are two completely different cliques...I've done both, I know both.

Thanks for your contribution to the shooting community and for teaching Alex everything he knows, we all need a little help along the ways. ;)

I need a lot of help! LOL. But to be clear I have never seen Larry do any gunsmith work. But I have learned from him thats for sure.

Better check your numbers.....
The ATA "Grand American" event gets more then 4200 in attendance every year itself, and the USA High School Trap Leagues in Minnesota had over 5,000 participants in 2015 alone.

Last Saturday was the final day of the grand. The grand American handicap usually draws the most shooters per event. Their were just over 2000 shooters (2037) I think. I was there. My first year that I shot the grand American handicap was in 1987. I think we had close too 5000 shooters in that event. I believe that the ata membership has ruffy 30,000 members now. Ten years ago they had close too 100,000 members.
