So I Got Me a Black Rifle

I must be about the last guy to get an AR. It's pretty much entry level economy type - Anderson Arms AM 15. Flat top, 1/8" twist, no sights, except the honking big squirrel scope I latched on with a Primary Arms cantilever base.

I took it out for sight in, and of course the design seems to suck for putting it on bags. But I got er done, and I believe it will shoot with a little load development. I picked up a few five round mags for this, and found a Harris Bipod laying around here I thought I'd try. I've never used a bipod before, and thought I'd ask opinions. Would it be best to try a rear bag under the grip, or clear back under the collapsable stock? The barrel is completely free floating within the hand guard.

If I seem stupid about these rifles, it's because I am. jd

I use rabbit ears under the rear, and standard front rest under the front stock. Just make sure the front rest is enough away from the mag well and the clamping section of the forearm. So it doesn't hit those areas under recoil. Keeping an AR tracking from shot to shot is way more manual than most rifles, but you can still do pretty decently. Also don't let the barrel heat up.

I highly suggest a bobsled single shot mag for load development. take one or two more variables out of the way while you are tuning loads.

That's what I've done so far. The rear stock just kind of sucks for that. I'm tempted to get a conventional A2 rear stock for the bench. jd

I've found the large triad tactical tapered rear bag (triadtactical.com) works well for me in conjunction with a bipod. I did have to add a few more beans to get it as stiff as I like, but it is pretty versatile when dealing with irregular conditions.

JD has an AR :)
Now, add Flashlight and a Laser.
Looks good with the scope.
That stock is light and will be perfect running through the neighbors yard taking out chickens :)
Caldwell has a big front bag that's cheap. Plop the hand guard on it and just steer from the rear.

Got me a new stock. Working on a bag rider to take out the slope in the toe.
Got the Grip also. Going with a carbine buffer and spring and 41 quarters in the A2 tube for the weight.

So I've been there as well. I have a rifle length A2 on my first AR. Load development was a breeze with that and the bobsled

For my 2 other ARs they have collapsible stocks, Daniel defense made. Not good at riding bags. I did not want to change too much during load development so I stayed away from switching to the A2 rifle length. So I bought a BCM mod 1 SOPMOD stock for load development.i basically scoured images of collapsible stocks that looked like they would work well with a rear bag. It was excellent and easy to use. when I switched back to the Daniel defense rear stocks, I did not notice any accuracy change

I've been messing around with it and learning the essentials. So far I got the trigger reduced from a full 8.5 pounds down to a creepy 4 1/2. It actually feels OK, but then I've been known to shoot SKS's for fun.

RV, I don't think I could afford that many quarters for the tube.

I figure I still need to get a laser, GPS, bottle opener, blue tooth speaker, go-pro cam, radio dog control, and amplified speaker. Can ya suggest anything else? jd

Scope will get in the way of the bottle opener.
Ask me how I know :)
Check out the various Luth-AR stocks.

Don't go crazy shopping for AR stuff (except to get rid of that $6 stock).
Shoot it, establish a base line as is.
Try wrapping a kitchen hand towel around the stock.
Takes the hard point out and adds a little cheek rest, pretty much FREE.

I bought 2 about 2 years ago from Cabela's. The young kid at the counter couldn't believe I had never shot one. I saw him eyeballing my Vietnam Veterans baseball cap. I told him the weapon I used over there was black but, quite a bit heavier. It's been a learning process but since then I have installed new barrels, different buttstocks, and triggers. They are OK to shoot but, I still don't like them. My grandson is the driving force here.

Let me give you a little bit of advice that will save you A LOT IF HEADACHES.

Ditch the carbine stock and get you a nice one with a bag rider section and adjustable cheek. The luth MBA 3 has been wayyyy worth the $150 I paid for it
Also I learned on average that AR's a bit more finicky then bolt guns and you really really need to be on your P's and Q's when shooting them

Will also say if you used to bolt guns .....buckle up some stuff that works amazing with bolt gun seems not to work real well with AR's

Like other's mentioned. If you are shooting off a rear bag replace the butt stock. I'm using a Magpul SPR which is kind of pricey. This thread shows other options. Here is my setup:

Congratulations! I don’t shoot most of mine for super accuracy. I just pull mine into my shoulder with the fore arm sitting on a rest. With a bipod, I push it forward a little to “load” the legs.
