So I Bought an Annual Range Membership

I pay $50/year and have to provide at least 20 hours of volunteer time throughout the year. The range is open to the public Fri-Sun. The volunteer hours get me a key to the gate to use it anytime during the week and access to member only ranges during public hours. 4 ranges go to 200 yards and one range goes to 600 yards.

It's about 20 minutes from my house. The main range is covered and has some concrete benches. All the auxliary ranges are covered and have steel and plywood benches.

Went to my high priced range in Bogalusa and due to miscommunication, 600 e-target wasn't set up.
Could have asked but decided on walking a target, and BulletCam out to 200 yds.
Got up to 90F and 200 was far enough :)
Flo beat my groups most of the morning (just barely :) ) with her bolt gun.

Final challenge, last remaining shots (I had 6, she had 10), winner gets top.
Green squares are about 1/2 MOA, 3 inch dots, at 200yds

We're in country where it isn't too hard to find open country to shoot. At this park, just the daily fee of 10 bucks is enough to keep a lot of folks from shooting there. Heck, I've always been one of those folks. That keeps these ranges from getting very crowded. The times I've been there, there has never been more than a few other folks there. The benches are concrete, and covered, and there are wood stoves for wintertime shooting. jd
well jd- at the range i go to guest fee for one day is 40 bucks. they only have rifle ranges and only to 1K. nothing fancy either. 70 a year sounds like a good deal.

I think I'll get my moneys worth. I belong to a group of right wing, conservative, pro-gun, Bible thumpers, who also shoot out there. I see more group shooting in our future. I'm hoping we can get some kids involved. jd

I think it's a bargain for what they offer. I belong to two clubs with annual fees on $35 each but they only offer a 100-yard rifle range at one and a 200-yard range at the other. The pistol ranges are high quality, however.

The big advantage for me is both clubs are close, one 5 miles away, the other 11. Since I spend to 2 to 3 days a week at the rifle range and 2 days a week at the pistol range, this makes it economical and easy.

The range I go to here in Virginia is $200.00/year. It is a 45 minute drive from my house. 75 mile round trip @25 miles to the gallon = 3 gallons X 3.40 = $10.20 + 2 tolls @ 5.75= Total $21.70 just to get there and back. So far this year I've gone there 13 times. They have 13 skeet fields, and a couple other shotgun games I don't use. also a shotgun patterning range, an archery field and 4 other ranges. 1 25 yd. pistol range, one 100 yard rifle range with 30 benches, and 2, 50 yard pistol/rimfire, "whatever as long as it does not have wheels" ranges. They all have covered shooting positions and tables and/or benches. Also Porta-potties in each range.
It is very nicely run, and on week-days, which is when I go, I basically have the place to myself.
The ride there is half expressway, half country road and is very pleasant. So far I've been there 13 times this year.

I initially balked at the $200/year, coming from where I also used to pay +/- $65-70. But that seems to be the going rate around here and those $200.00, amortized over the year are not all that bad. Again, very nice, well run range, worth every penny.

There was an initiation fee, but I can't remember what it was. I'm happy there.

I am fortunate to have 3 ranges within reasonable driving distance from my home. One is a 20 minute drive, the second about 30 minutes, and the third a little over an hour. I belong to all three. All three have smallbore and centerfire competition. My wife says I am a shootaholic, and she is probably right, but it keeps me occupied and out of the bars. With the cost of ammunition and components I couldn't afford much alcohol anyway.

Plus one on living in a fortunate place. I drove out to my squeak shooting fields this morning which is under five miles. I'd do more shooting over there, but the wind is usually ripping pretty bad. I took this portable bench and Caldwell sled I just got, and could see about an inch of on target dispersion at 200 yards. -- not exactly a concrete bench. Two hundred yard group was about 2" which I thought was pretty good considering.

Still had a nice few hours of shooting. One hundred shells, and don't really know my kill percentage. If the squirrels don't explode, it's about impossible to verify a hit, with the alfalfa as tall as it's getting. I did OK.

The range I joined is pretty good about wind protection, and is in an area that simply doesn't get the wind that we do around here. Almost every afternoon around here we get steady or gusty wind from 10-20 mph, and often more. jd
