So are there any 6.8 SPC ii fans here?

I have a 20" AR. I haven't loaded and shot it in over 5 years. When I used it prior, I loaded 115SMK and 110 Vmax bullets over Benchmark powder. With the standard (lousy) trigger off a front bag, it would shoot 10 shot group within 1 1/4".

Amazed that this cartridge doesn't have a larger following, especially with folks that hunt the woods for whitetail. Now, I have hunted some really mature hardwoods, overlooking the area from the side of a ridge and a 200yd shot is really, really iffy. You have to pick your shots carefully to remotely reach that distance. A perfect scenario for a lightweight 6.8 build.

If you look over the factory ammo data from Hornady with the SST bullet, the 6.8 still delivers over 1100 ft/lbs at 200yds and that is from a 16" barrel. Yes, their 6.5 Grendel ammo delivers more HP at the longer distances...BUT, they get that data from a 24" test barrel. Dragging a 24" barreled AR into the woods just didn't float my boat. So, the 6.8 was my choice for a very lightweight AR-based rifle.

The trajectory of that factory 120gr SST when using a scope mount that places the scope centerline at the same height above bore as battle sights yields the following numbers: 2" high at 100yds and 2" low at 200yds. This is not calculated, it was fired with multiple groups. The ones that I have assembled with a 16" Stag barrel will group between 1 and 2 MOA @ 100 yds, some on the low end and others on the high end. Makes things pretty simple for deer hunting in the woods: From the muzzle to as far as you can pick a clean shot, you aim dead center of the kill zone. Easy peasy for old duffs like me. Though I have handloaded a bit for it, I pretty much stuck with the Hornady factory fodder because 2MOA at 200yds (my AR) is all the accuracy that I will ever need for hunting.

Am about to assemble another pair of rifles in this caliber. One is based on an Aero upper/lower for a friend, a Black Rain Skullz barrel (which I believe to be junk) and a RRA 2-stage NM trigger. The other is based on a Cav-15 lower that was given to me. That will have an Anderson upper, a Stag barrel and a JMT trigger. It will be my ultralight woods and stalking rifle.

You guys that are shooting 120's...what powder are you loading?

I crunch powder with 3 different 110's, loaded to mag length.

What barrel length and gas system?

<20" barrels do well with AA2200, 322, and similar. >20" I use 335, CFE223, AA2520, W748, BLC2

Good round in a standard AR platform. A 2200 is best bet for max velocity. AR performance makes really good barrels for the money.

I have used both 16" and 18" barrels on my 6.8's and got the best results with H322. The photo i posted had a 16" barrel and i used H322.

Have not tried it yet, but a article in one of the magazines, said that CFE BLK works well in it, with lighter bullets. I mainly only shoot 110 grains on deer/coyote. Bill K
