Snow Shoot? Winter Match?

Nodak7mm

Maybe I am prematurly going cabin crazy, maybe I am just crazy, but am wondering if anyone here has put on or participated in a match held in the winter with snow? Like these "Freeze yer Gizzard, Blizzard Run" or Snow Golf with flourescent balls?

Wondering out loud if any of you Northern Tier guys would participate in a fun match while dressed in carharts, snoboots, facemasks and laying in the snow?

Thoughts, Comments, Curses? Looking for match format & ideas...

There is a match in the northern tier suburbs of Minneapolis in the heart of winter. I will get you the particulars. It would be perfect for a Nordahkotun wid a frozen cranium.

Yah, I taut of you der ta be ferst ta line up, yah Dafudd!!

;D

Who knows what this may turn out to be. I am kind of just throwing a few feelers around, asking a few things of club/range powers that be. Could be nothing, could be fun.. Who knows, paper jackrabbits and paper coyotes with a warming house & food.. Can it get much more exciting up here? ;)

The first match I ever shot in (only 3 yrs ago, 300yd informal IBS) was in February with about 6 inches of snow on the ground and still snowing. It was nice to not need wind flags, because you could read the snowflakes. It was also pretty calm so they may not have helped much anyway. It was a beautiful day, where it wasn't too cold, and it was pretty cool to be able to shoot in those conditions.

Thats why I think it should work. Lol... Jackrabbits at 300 & yotes at 600? Combo egg/varmint shoot, just in the snow.. Not sure how far I'll take it. Doing all the logistical planning at this point (dreaming).

We'll see..

I am a member of GRRC in Minneapolis and enjoy shooting on the KD range most months of the year. Yesterday was an amazing day to be on the range easily in my top five days of the year. In January of every year GRRC has a blackpowder match in January but that is it for organized matches until late April.

There is a range in Princeton MN that holds tactical style matches in the winter months as the gravel pit these use is shut down for the winter, I have never shot one of these but know people who have and they recommend it.

Minneapolis rifle club holds monthly shoots at their 300 meter range every month, they shoot from a heated building and use electronic targets so there is no pit duty. I highly recommend the monthly shoots at MRC as it is fun way to keep your skills up in the Winter and are a bunch of great guys.

I would guess there are more than this in MN but these are the ones that come to mind.

Only a NorDakotahan or a Norwegian would ever think of having an egg shoot in the snow!! :-[

I shot in Princeton last winter. It sure isnt an F-class match and i wouldnt call it tactical so much. But its cold. Targets are from 100-500 yards most are set at known distances. Its a little slow paced and very relaxed atmosphere but its a fun time. Its typicaly held twice a month but it will get called off for days that are too cold.

Its a good change up and the only competitive shooting going on here in the winter. I dont know how all the other guys just shut down for half the year up here but we are out there, and some baddass 80+ year old guys are out there schooling everyone.

Send me a message and I will give you the number to the guy that owns the range and he will have the number to the guy that sets up the shoot.

Looking for any and all ideas. Bear in mind this is purely conceptual at this point, but what would you (those with antifreeze in their gonads) that would brave the cold, lay in the snow, frost your scope lense and freeze your trigger finger think would be a fun, yet challenging shoot.. ??

Heck, just playing around with this idea is already making the winter look fun.. But logistically, would be a major undertaking... But nothing worthwhile is easy, eh?

Our club has a winter varmint league.

Our shoot is at 300 yards. We have 2 prairie dog targets, 1 groundhog, 1 crow, 1 cat and a bonus/side competition where there is a fly to hit. You get 10 points for hitting the body, and an X if you hit the 0.5 MOA circle in the middle of the animal. There are no wind flags allowed.

There are usually two relays. You shoot 5 rounds then the fly. The targets are then brought down and marked and the scores are read off to the shooters. Stand around and BS a few minutes, then shoot 5 more with fly and re-score. You then switch to the pits for the others to shoot. They shoot then you shoot 2 more times, then switch back. The total possible score is 200 with 20Xs. The side bet is the highest number of flies hit (wings don't count, must be body hit).

We shoot this match the second Sunday of each month November through April. There are snow shoots depending on weather and most shoots are very cold.

I think it is a blast and look forward to it each month.

Hope that helps.
