smooth finish on grind-to-fit recoil pad

Adding a thicker LimbSavr pad to one of my guns... using a grind-to-fit model I picked up from the local gun store.

Anyone have a trick or two to getting a nice 'finished' look on these things? The instructions said to use WD-40, and a lot of it... which seems to have the effect of 'feathering' the edge a bit so it doesn't quite have the ground rubber *look*... but its still a long way from looking finished. Usable, yes, finished, no.

TIA,

Monte

I have a lot of both Limbsavers & Decelerators. The Limbsaver is hands down better on reducing felt recoil. A couple tricks finishing either but especially a Limbsaver is to put it in the freezer overnight & then use a paste wax as you sand on it. It's harder to get a perfect finish on a Limbsaver but this will help you.

You need to go really slow while grinding or you'll turn it into a nasty gel....
The last few thousandth should be removed with the finest grit you can come up with and kept cold while doing it.
I keep a bucket of ice water close at hand at all times...
Go slow and keep it cold and it will look fine......

Mmmm... think I might just chalk this one up as a learning experience ::)

I found a video tutorial on Limbsaver's web site... looks like the belt grinder they used spins a bit faster than mine, the orientation is different, and it looks like that B-square jig is really handy ??? The belt they used for final finish is really, really fine - pretty much just polishing - way finer than anything I can get locally for mine.

I'll get a finer belt for mine and toss the pad in the freezer overnite and see where that gets me. Like I said, its done enough to be serviceable - but pretty sure no one that sees it will ever ask me to do one for them. Come to think on it, that might be a good thing ;)

I thought I found the perfect pad when I ground my first Sims.

But after 6 months of the gun standing on end the thing was squashed and distorted, more JUNK.

i table mounted disk sander does very well, it cuts down on the feathered look. You can also try freezing then sanding, it will leave a better finish

The reason it's doing that squashed and distorted stuff is it was getting to hot while grinding it..
