Smith & Wesson 629 grips

I was in local gun store last week and spotted a 629 and took a liking to it, have been thinking of getting a 44 for sometime. Did some research on it I don’t have as much knowledge about them. I stumbled on talks about the smith combat grips and seems they are worth some money. Anyway I went back today and bought the gun, was just curious how I can tell if they are real combats or not I figured there is guys on here that would be able to tell. I don’t plan on selling them but since I will carry this hunting instead of messing them up I will put factory rubbers back on . The gun is a 629-3 with 7.5 inch barrel doesn’t look to have been used much.

Best way to know for sure is to post this question over on smith-wessonforum.com. They can confirm for sure. They look original to me but the finish is not as shiny as I would expect for factory grips. But I am not the grip expert.

I believe the Combat grips are square butt and checkered. Wouldn’t swear...
Those are NICE grips!

Since you have the box there can be a lot told from the product code found on the end of the box.
The 629-3 itself started production in 1989 and looks like the next. change (629-4) came in 1993.
Those grips may or may not be original to the gun. A lot depends on that product code because guns were sometimes done for certain distributors with slight differences.
If you don't want it out for all to know send me a PM and I can likely give you some good info.

7.5in barrels are pretty uncommon the first dx 629s were round butt 7.5 barreled stainless high polished cased guns 3000 guns were made but distributors did special of their own my 29-5 is 7.5 in. round butt, came with combats like yours plus rubber square butt conversion s&w monogramed Hogue grips, your grips look original and correct to me research yours, nice revolver

I am thinking it may be a distributor run it also has the black rubber grips in the box. Other member here made a good point on his research it may have been a over run on the magna classic they made which is the exact same as this. Magnas were a limited run andcame in a wooden box and had it stamped on barrel though, but identical.

my gun was a run of mod 29s made from extra magna classic inventory parts left over from their 3000 numbered run

That could make sense on how I got mine because that barrel length shouldn’t be on a standard 629-3. Some real real low number runs I imagine.
