Small Rifle Primers and 6BR cases

zullo74

Can anyone explain to me why 6mmBR Norma cases use small rifle primers? There is much more variation in small primers than large primers. Does anyone produce 6mmBR cases that use large rifle primers? ???

The reason is that it shoots better with the SR primer. This is the same reason the 6PPC uses it. Rationale is that the small case does not need a large primer to ignite the powder and the large primers are overkill - IIRC.

The 6PPC which which has only a few grains less capacity, uses a SR primer. Since this is undoubtedly the most accurate short range Benchrest cartridge, you might want to reexamine your conclusion, and focus on something else. The small primer and flash hole works because there needs to be a balance between primer force and case size that is more important than the variations that you are concerned about.

zullo, no Mfg make BR brass with large primer pockets, that I ever heard of, and I only know of two that even make BR brass.
So how would you go about making it from say a 308 case?

#1) You might have to have several neck down dies made, cut off the case and anneal it dead soft, and take it down a little at a time, it doesent sound like fun to me.

#2) I would rather find, or have made, a flat bottomed milling bit the correct size, and mill out the small pocket on some Lapua 6BR brass to fit large primers, plus enlarge the flash hole to the standard size, it sounds like it would be a lot less work this way.
Mike.

The Remington BR brass has the large primer pockets. This brass has not been as consistant as the Lapua or the Norma brass.Tom.

I produce them from 243/308 cases using 7mmBR forming dies. They work great on coyote and groundhogs...dead is dead. They didn't seem to be able to tell difference between Lapua brass case and the ones I formed from other cases. have to neck turn but only did low number as test.

Chuck, You might want to check the date of this thread. It’s ten years old. I still haven’t seen factory LRP in 6BR.

Dont know about everything Rem ever made, but all the URBR brass I ever saw was SRP.
Back, when I first started shooting short range competition, Jim Stekl of Remington came up with the idea to produce a round that would compete with the PPC, using American made brass and Remington made a production run of the URBR brass which was a full length .308 case with a small primer. The case was shortened and necked down to 6MM through a series of forming dies and the 6BR was born. Although never quite succeeding in replacing the 6PPC, the case has been reborn in the LR 600 & 1000yd yard game along with a whole lot of other variations based off of the 6BR case. Thank you Jim! :)
