Small Rifle Primer Shortage

I am dollar poor but small rifle primer rich.I shoot a 6.5 x 47 and a 6BRA in my competition rifles with both taking the small primer. I had some extra coin in my pocket back in the beginning of the year and my local sporting good store had five cases of 205M primers that we’re not moving quickly but I bet they are gone now. Of course we all knew this was an election year and us old enough to remember what has happened in the past so I let history be a good teacher and snatched up another case of primers. I should be good to go for another four year presidential term maybe two terms depending on how many matches I shoot. Just like toilet paper recently primers are always one of the first things to be bought out. Still have a stash of Sears and Roebuck catalog’s in replacement of TP,can’t think of anything that can replace primers.

Don't need any but after reading this I checked with a number of vendors.
Wow. No primers anywhere. Is this how they get us?

This is not "them" it's "us". So if your press sit's Idle just a bit more this next year take solace in the fact that the American gun buying public his an enormous monster that can empty warehouses in a matter of weeks. All warehouses, not some. This doesn't stop at primers - powder (all types), 9MM, 45ACP, 223/5.56 you name it it's gone. If you are not experiencing shortages where you are - great! You will. I am a dealer and buy from all over, there is nothing to be had. My store inventory looks pathetic. Hardly any rifle powder, no pistol powder, pistols? Let me back order one for you. Like nothing I have seen and this is my 3rd panic in 6 years.

I picked up 1K of BR-4 and 1K 205s from Bruno's about 3 months ago. Tried to buy 10K of each, but I guess they were out.

Now, I'm scrounging locally from every shooter that has any type of SRP they'll part with.

Luckily I have plenty of LRPs I bought after the last shortage.

How long do you guys think this primer shortage is going to last.
That's a really tough question. The last couple shortages lasted around a year or so but the reason behind the hoarding never happened. Lysol says the shortage of their wipes will last well into 2021 and if I had to guess I'd say primers will take about as long. On the other hand, if bad things happen come election day we might be wishing we'd spent the $125/1000 that primers are going for on Gunbroker right now.

Back in the 90's there was a primer shortage that lasted about 2-3 years IIRC. It wasn't a direct political issue that caused it but rumors that spread like wildfire that the government was going to demand that manufacturers make primers with a limited usable life. The objective being to prevent stockpiling ammo. Ammo got scarce but primers vanished overnight and for quite a long time. Near the end I was at an outdoor gun show/swap meet in central Ohio and two guys showed up with a tractor/trailer full of Federal primers at inflated but almost acceptable prices. Sold them all in two days...

I think your right on the worst one yet, and it may be the longest lasting shortage also.

I'm afraid I'm not optimistic about Nov 4 => demand will increase; production probably not. Mfg's know/expect it's a 'blip'. They probably would, if not already, try to get more production out of existing facilities.

Lesson to be learned here. Build the Arc before the rain starts.

I remember going through the same scene in the Clinton 90's. Didn't worry then (had no time to shoot & young family) don't worry now (still don't have the time, but retirement is only a year off and I'm loading & getting ready for pasture rats).

Quick side bar: was loading some Federal 215's I picked up in the mid 70's (they were old stock even back then) .99/100 on the sticker from Sioux Sporting Goods. Wish I had a time machine.

I have this fear that they’re not going to take our guns. They’re going after the ammo and components.
