Small Primer Brass

Recently purchased some Peterson 6.5 Creedmoor brass, SRP. This is the first time I have used SRP brass. Don't know if I'm having a problem or not (?). Anyway, try as I might, I can't get the primers to seat much more than the bottom of the case. I'm using CCI BR's. Is this normal with small primer brass? The best I can measure the seated primer is about .002 below the base. Would that be enough? I adjusted my primer seater for max depth and no matter how much force I apply, the primers will not seat any deeper.

Changing primers may help. You shouldn’t have a problem as you are though. If in doubt, contact Peterson.

I have 100 pieces of the same brass and I’m using the same primers you are. Sounds like an issue with brass. I would contact them directly, if they handle customer service like do everything else you’ll be taken care of.

Buy a primer pocket uniformer. It should remove metal from the bottom of the pocket to the proper depth.

Peterson rep just called me. Apparently they have received a few complaints/concerns on the tightness of the small primer pocket brass. They have already addressed the issue and have eased off on the specs for the pockets on their current run. I have a second order already in the mail from them. The rep wasn't sure if I would be getting the "new" run or not. However, he said that when I get the 2nd order to check them out and if I felt the pockets were too tight to give him a call and he would arrange a direct exchange for some "new" run brass. So, we'll see. I did end up seating some of the primers down to about .003. But, at that point I was pressing so hard on the primer tool handle there was no, "feel" on the primer seating or not.

If the primer pocket is clean (should be it's new brass, right) then what measurement were you looking for? Why does the .002 bother you? If the primer is seated in the pocket, meaning to the bottom, and it is not protruding above the case head.....well then in answer to your question...YES....seated is seated. As long as the firing pin can reach it you are good....LOL

The .002 does not bother me! What I don't know is , is the primer properly seated at that depth? Normally I can feel the primer hit the bottom of the case and then I add, ever so slight, a little bit more seating force. These pockets are so tight there is no seating feel. Are you saying that, as long as the primer is not protruding above the case head it is seated properly?

Well. Great. Just got my last order of brass from them about 90 minutes ago. I don't know!! Five of the new cases wouldn't even hold the primer. Four other cases I could push in a primer with my finger. They want to see the 9 bad cases. Some of the cases took the primers very easy...Too easy!

NO. I said "If the primer is seated in the pocket, meaning to the bottom, ..."

However I see now that you say in your post#8 "....there is no seating feel".
That of course makes 'feeling it seat' impossible. And 'not protruding above the case' is NOT an indication of of a fully seated primer necessarily.

I just measured a few of mine (different brass and cartridges) and I get .002-.004 below flush over about 50 cartridges. I seat my primers in clean pockets with a separate bench RCBS primer......and no unusual force and good feel.

I gotcha you. I also try for .004 below and I have the same primer tool with the Holland option.Just have to see how they shoot. Wish I could just kick myself in the a##. Should've just gonna ahead and got some Lapua cases.

By any chance did the Peterson rep mention if the issue affected other caliber SRPs? I just received my first order of .260 Rem SRPs, but have yet to try and prime them. I may give them a call later today.

I'm not sure how after running a good primer pocket uniformer in, there could be any way you wouldn't be able to properly feel/seat a primer bottom.

That being said, the absolutely last thing I would ever ask a brass manufacturer to do, is to loosen primer pockets. You can always take material out, you can't put it back in.

I hope you get this resolved.

We are working on this issue. We have also sold 10's of thousands of our 6.5 Creedmoor SRP's to various retail shooters. Out of those we have only had a handful of complaints about the primer pockets. We are very curious to get the ones that he sent back to us. This is a complaint that i have never heard about that our primer pockets are too loose. Anyways, we always do our best to keep all our customers happy!!

I have some 6.5 srp from Peterson and it's the best brass I have ever had period, and yes the primer pockets are tight, and they stay that way too. Pretty sure all of the top line suppliers of are components have had a small issue from time to time. Give Peterson a chance to sort it out.

I sent them back this morning. Total 9 cases. The ones with the black mark are the ones that will not hold a primer at all. The primer drops out just by tilting the case. The others were cases where I could insert the primer with my fingers. All in all, I wish to thank you for listening to my problem and responding so promptly. I am more that sure you will take care of this problem. Things happen, we correct them and move on. Again, thank you for your courtesy and attention.
