I did your method and it worked well. When reversing the tool back to the start, the thread dial was slightly off the mark/number due to backlash but once running fwd to cut again the marks aligned perfect. Being a novice I only cut a dummy thread to test the method but feel sure it will cut the real thing just fine.

You can thread up to your point to where you end your thread. disengage your half nuts back out your cross slide shut the lathe off. then put your lathe in reverse till the number on your threading dial is lined back up with the number again. engage your half nuts back the carriage to the start of your thread and have at it.
