Small Caliber Powder Funnels???

Which brand / model of powder funnels do the majority here use for loading 17 and 20 caliber ammo?

Hypothetical here now... Let's talk 20 cal...

Let's say you have a 20BR, 20-250 etc along with lets say a 20 vartarg that you load for, two different size case bodies and neck angles).

Will the 20 cal satern funnel work on both of these cases?

Or would you have to get a different / larger size funnel for the larger diameter cases?

One funnel would work for all three. The funnel is sized and sits on the neck OD and not on the shoulder.

I have recently retired my Lee funnel and purchased a Lyman funnel set. Although I only load a minimum size of .223 Remington size necks, I am happier now. The Lee may have merely worn out, but I can and do appreciate not having to thunk in my charges by numerous finger plinks. I feel ready for many years of .223 Remington reloading with a scale by scale reading from my new Lyman Balance Scale. I feel empowered! cliffy One finger plink is enough . . .

I bought an MTM funnel set that has various inserts for the different calibers including one for .17 and .20. Also has one for the short magnums as well as a drop tube. Comes in a container. Works very well.

I have retired my plastic funnels,MTM & Bonanza) after buying my first Satern funnel,.20 cal). I now have one for each different caliber that I load for, including .17 cal). I especially like that the Satern has the brass weight at the bottom, which adds stability to the funnel.

If you would have told me 3 years ago that I would be happily paying $10+ for a funnel, I would have said you were crazy. Since that time, I have bought 7 different Satern funnels from Midway, and could not even imagine using anything other than the metal fitted funnels.

And with me using more and more ball powders, the possibility of the funnel sliding to the side, and me spilling powder all over the place is drastically reduced.

You best e-mail Sinclair with this question. They also sell these funnels, and their catalog mentions the need for using a larger model than the one listed for the caliber when using certain cases. They will be able to answer your question with certainty.

I have the MTM plastic funnel set and it has served me well loading .223 up through .30-06. However, I tried using it on my new .223AI and I was dumping powder all over the loading bench. Something about the way .223AI shells sit all a gap b/t the funnel and the case mouth.

In order to improvise during this loading session, I had to create a funnel by rulling up an index card and using some scotch tape for the seams. It was ghetto but it worked.

Had the same problem as 'hunt127' with my new 6AI. The shoulder prevented a seal between the normal-sized funnel and case mouth. Saw grains of powder on my bench then realized what the problem was. Wound up using the .17 adapter in my MTM funnel set to charge the 6AI shells. The long neck of the 6AI case keeps the shoulder out of the adapter. Hey, whatever works!

By the way, to get rid of static charges on new plastic funnels, dip the corner of a paper towel in some graphite and rub it around inside the funnel. Works like a charm.

Since using the satern funnels, I will probably never use a different funnel again.

i made a braket attached to the top of rock chucker that holds a forster drop tube funnel for .223 on up and got 6' of small dia. thin wall brass tube at hardware store to make a smaller tube for 17/20 and jb glued it to old funnel. one bolt to change funnel or adjust hight. i use charge master, grab primed case from bin, place under funnel with left hand and dump powder with right, move case 4' to shell holder as i am putting pan back on scale with right hand. left hand is placing bullet in case mouth as right is seating bullet. very fast and easy. i will NEVER use a moveable funnel again.
