Sm pistol Mag primers for .223?

OK tell me if I'm wrong here. Small pistol and small rifle primers are the same dimensions. BR primers are slightly weaker than standard Sm Rifle primers. The .22 Hornet uses sm pistol primers. So The 5 1/2 Rem pistol primer should be very close to equal to a Bench rest primer in a rifle case. I picked up a box just to experiment with. All I see are Small pistol Magnum primers everywhere, nothing else. Your thoughts??
,No I have not touched the Blue Kool-aid)

22 hornet is a rifle cartridge, use rifle primers. And not sure if your using a hornet or a 223 as per your thread title but i wouldnt use them with the pressure generated in a 223.

Bottom line if your reloading for a rifle cartridge use rifle primers and vice versa

Pistol primers tend to be softer than rifle primers. The Rem 6 1/2 primers are a rifle primer that's meant to stay under 45 ksi or so, and you can use it in 22 Hornet.

Since a pistol tops out around 40 ksi, you might be able to get away with using SP mag primers in a 22 Hornet, but I'd start very low on the load chart to try it.

My personal feeling is that there's a reason for the SP and SR and SRmag designations and the general consensus from customer service with primer makers is cup hardness/thickness. I'd be hesitant to try pushing a SP primer into a rifle round, even a light 22 Hornet load.

A CCI 400 primer has a .020' thick shell, whilst a CCI 450 primer has a .025' thick shell. I consider CCI 400 primers proper for .22 Hornet, .218 Bee, .219 Zipper, and .222 Remington applications, BUT FOR stout .222 Remington Magnum and MOST .223 Remington loads, I learned the hard way to OPT for CCI 450 Magnum primers. I experiment REGULARILY at the range. Pierced primers send gobs of goop into the firing pin hole and gum-up the works. I use what I use because it works for me. I've yet to pierce a CCI BR-4 primer, but those are more costly. Cliffy

Sorry guys, I've been busy and have not posted. I decided days ago to let this idea go. If I could find a load that would work, it would be underpowered, and as stated many pierced primers.
