Slugging a barrel.

Are any of the Gunsmiths here slugging Benchrest barrels?

If so, please tell us more.

Thanks

Terry

I slug every .22 rimfire barrel I chamber. The main things to look/feel for are any tight or loose spots, how smooth it pushes through, where the tightest spot in the bore is, how much taper is lapped in the bore, and measuring the actual bore dimensions throughout the bore.

I used to slug my barrels and still occasionally slug them but in the end all that matters is if it shoots little groups or not.

A couple of the barrels were button rifled and not lapped so that was one of the reasons I slugged them but after slugging them and looking with a bore scope I decided to not lap them. I may try lapping one it the future though.
