Slower powders for 7 Shehane?

I shoot 180s in my Shehane for F class. Humming along at 2930'/sec they don't give in to the wind much. But I am wondering if there is more out there than 4831sc. Has anyone tried RL23 or RL 26? How about the new N565 from VihtaVouri? If so, what is a good starting point (I don't have access to Quick Load).

In 1000 yard BR, most have found once they reach the 3000 mark, accuracy seems to get worse. The one guy I know well told me in his 7 SAUM, he can easily reach 3000 but it doesnt shoot good there. He said 2900 is where it shoots. Matt

Try RL23. RL 26 would never give me three good matches before fouling out. I'd also like to hear about VV 565.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

My 284 Shehane shot sub half moa groups at 600 yards with 180 gr Hybrids, 56.0 gr RL 23 and CCI BR primer. Speeds were 3000 FPS.

For 70+ shots without cleaning?
I don't shoot anything that long without cleaning it. Most it gets is maybe 50, but no never had an issue with it getting overly fouled with the 26. I am shooting my bullets coated also

Same here, 55.5 grains of RL 23 was right at 2980 fps for me. With my lot of H4831 I was pushing real hard to reach 2900fps.

If you are shooting the Shehane at 2930, then you're already at the peak of what it can offer. Want more? Get a 7SAUM or 7-300WSM. But that doesn't really give you much more, going to the 300 WSM would be the next big step up.

I'm a sling shooter and if I can't get 70-75 accurate rounds between cleaning, the powder is of no use to me in that application. I also shoot moly bullets in all my comp rifles. I don't remember the charge wil RL-26, but I think it was close to what I'm shooting with Rl-23.
56-56.5 with 183 SMK's.
As always, start low and work your way up.

I will check what I was shooting I don't remember and I sold the gun but I think I have it in my notes. I do remember I had to use a drop tube and the 180 ELDM's were coated in tungsten

Anyone found RL23 gives a velocity boost in the straight 284case??

I will be trying in a month or so...hopefully(hurry up, McMillan!:D). I use RL-23 in a 6.5 x55 BJAI behind a 142gr bullet and it easily pushes it to the mid/upper 2900's with over 2.5gr less powder than H4831sc, is just as good on temp stability and precision. I plan on testing it against H4831sc and H4350 in a straight .284 early this spring.

I did a side by side comparison with equal weights of H-4831sc and RL23 in my Shehane under 183 SMK bullets. When I get back to the shop I’ll retrieve the data.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I don't have a 284 shehane, but I'm surprised nobody tried N-560 with the 180+grainers.

In other cartridges (243win with 105's & 300winmag with 175-180's) I can get around 100 fps more velocity with N-560 than H-4831 before starting to get pressure signs with both powders.

However, in both cartridges accuracy with both powders was identical and since H-4831 is more affordable and a little bit less temp insensitive, I settle down with H-4831.
But of course if N-560 had any accuracy advantage over H-4831 I would obviously choose the Vihtavuori over the Hodgdon powder.
