Slo mo bullet shockwave, WWII tank round

Have you guys seen this???! The huge shockwave a tank projectile produces as it pushes through the air is recorded with a super high speed camera, and it never gets old, no matter how many times I watch it. The value of slow motion photography is so incredible when it comes to learning how things work, and thanks to the internet and YouTube, it isn't just for scientists anymore. Now we just need a high speed camera integrated into a Labradar or chronograph, so we can really see what is going on!

This is similar to the "smarter every day" video on supersonic vs subsonic in slow motion, but the projectile from the tank is so large that the shockwaves can be seen in the air with the naked eye. You can really see them well in the second tracked firing, along with the crazy amount of yaw that is happening as the projo flies downrange before it stabilizes. Truly amazing, even the way they track the bullet with mirrors is super cool!

Science rocks, enjoy,

Dave

good video. For those that believe that there are rifles that will shoot through limbs and saplings all the while finding their intended target, they need to watch the slow motion portion of the large artillery round hitting the melons. Even a projectile that large will be knocked off course and not hit its intended target.

Greetings,
This is a cool video. The cameras abilities were great. The 8lb projectile @ 2500fps is pretty stout. To hell with this Extreme Long Range stuff, let's get Extreme Bore Diameter.
Take care,
John

If you listen closely, you can hear the round tumbling through the air for several seconds after it ricochets off the melons. There are a few comments about how far it might have gone down range. WAIT, WHAT....an artillery round ricocheting off a WATER MELLON? WTF?

I've seen that video before. Either it's cool but I'm curious about the ammo.

Some of these guys that own DD and trying to find original ammo is almost impossible and not to mention what they have to go thru if the round is a HE round. Ball ammo/AP ammo is one thing but a HE is another. So they make they're own bullets/projectiles.

If they made they're own was the projectile at least made to the proper spec's? If not the projectile might not fit the bore of the barrel properly and when it's fired doesn't fly like it should.

Either way it's cool and gives a physical image of what can happen to our regular bullets at times as well. Wish I had a 75 or 88mm anti tank gun. I'd love to just hammer big holes into things like cars, trucks etc... Some times you just want to wreck stuff! :)

They said the projectile was made of steel but didn't say anything about a barrel band. The video taken under the barrel shows 2 pieces of something flying after the shot. I wonder if that is something the projectile is wrapped in for sealing and rifling protection.
