Bad to get rabies down here. If one comes strolling through the yard at night at leave it be. During the day, acting weird I use extreme prejudice as far away as I can. Hopefully in the yard across the road 100 yards away Don't like them much. Sick one ain't going in a trap anyway.

Trapper Mike tells me you must sever the spinal chord to stop them from spraying. I use a 12 gauge, usually there is some smell.

Guy I work with uses a pellet rifle and shoots them thru the lungs. He say the quieter the better, claims when lung preasure leaks out that there is no pressure to push on gland.

Headed out to my Tin Shed to get more pellets for my stove. Couldn't figure out why I saw pellets coming out of the crack between the sliding doors. Some kind of critter got in the shed, chewed open about 5 bags of pellets, spread them all over the floor and tried to make my shed it's home.
Cleaned up the mess and taped a few bags. Stack of pellet bags had been knocked over. Figured maybe find a dead critter under the bags? Nothing there.
Checked the next day and found a couple of bags chewed on, AGAIN. Taped up the bags, left the doors cracked a bit and set a live trap about 12" from the doors. Baited it with fallen apples and a small dish of Cat food. Next morning? BINGO!! SKUNK IN THE TRAP. Covered it with a blanket, picked up the trap and moved it to the field. Got the door open and the skunk was off and running. About 50 feet away I threw an apple at it and his tail went up while it was still running. No stink from it but the blanket smelled for a couple of weeks. The door to the shed now stays closed when I'am not working in there.
Really surprised the skunk didn't come out with all the noise I was making while cleaning up. Used a Canister Vac to suck up the loose pellets. Lucky I had some empty bags for the loose pellets.

What you need is a skunk trap. My grampa had skunk trouble where he lived so he made a trap. As I remember he used a piece of 4" pipe. Could'a been smaller but hey that was a long time ago. Then he made a false floor that would tip as the skunk entered. The far end was closed off with a metal plate. The entrance had a sliding door that fell when the skunk went in far enough to cause the false floor to tip forward. Place an egg in the far end. Now Mr skunk is in the pipe with the door down. He doesn't have enough room to raise his tail. This trap also had a metal handle on top. We'd take the trap to the creek and tie a rope on it. Tie it off and toss it in the creek. Leave immediately as the skunk would discharge his spray somehow. It always floated up to the top and stank. Go dig a hole and come back later. Dump skunk in hole and you are done.

I ran into one leaving my stand and the little devil went after me. I wasn’t really expecting that and he gave up the chase as soon as he saw how fast I was! Lol
We used to get a quarter for them at the fur house (same price as cats)... here kitty kitty

Caught one in a leg hold trap yesterday and decided to test this theory, shot it thru the lungs with a 17hmr.........gave it a day cause I didn’t want to deal with it! Turns out it worked, removed it this morning and no smell, NADA!! Will continue to test and report back. So far works
