Skim neck turning once fired brass question

I am wanting to skim neck turn some once fired brass as I am looking for .003 neck clearance in my chamber. Cartridge in question is a 6MM AI. With my Redding Type S bushing die with a .268 bushing it is only sizing about 80% of the neck and can't get die to size any more. I am wanting to get entire neck sized down than expand and finish with a skim cut. What die do I need or can anyone offer possible suggestions?

Frank

I'm not willing to do that, just fireformed this brass and have some time in them. Not to mention new Winchester 6MM cases are like hens teeth.

Frank.

If I'm neck turning my brass, I use a non-bushing die to full length re-size it first, then trim to length and de-burr. Then I will neck turn. At present I'm using Forster full length dies in both 6XC and 260 Rem.

Once I'm done neck turning, I will clean the brass and may then use the bushing die.

JCS, do the Forster FL dies size entire neck? To make a long story short i did not take enough off the new cases and am looking to make a very light skim cut on entire sized neck after expanding of course.

Frank... the "S" bushing dies only size ~80% of the neck - your results are normal.

You can turn them after firing and before sizing, or you can get a standard FL die and size them like CampbellSmith suggested.

Catshooter, I did check a fired case on my PMA neck turn tool and case is just a tad loose on the mandrel, I'll look into a Forster FL die for 6MM AI.

I would do what Damon said...Make a custom mandrel for the turning tool that fits your fired neck ID. Any one with a lathe could make one easily. If its only a tad loose try an E mandrel.

Anneal them, buy K&M expander, expand, and then use your K&M neck turner. It has micrometer steps so you can leave what you want on your necks.NT on all 2nd hand brass to uniform the necks.Use 15/50 oil to lube. Found that tip on here. Necks come up like glass.

This may be the way to go. The fired cases are a tad loose on my PMA mandrel. Tried to locate a Forster FL die but they don't make one in 6AI. I may call Pat at PMA today.

Last night was trying to figure out a way to run entire case neck into a .268 TIN bushing with my arbor press which is easy but how to get bushing back off case neck is the big question. I thought about fabbing some sort of captive device to hold the bushing. The bushing is thick enough to size 100% of neck with some room left over.

The fired case mandrel is the way to go. If you manage to figure out a way to make a bushing size 100% of your neck, I promise you will screw up the neck runout big time by moving neck metal that close to the shoulder. There is a reason the bushing dies don't size 100% of the neck.

Frank,

This might be a stupid suggestion but do you have another bushing die that is larger than you 6mm? You could put your bushing in that die and use it to just size the neck without touching the rest of the case. Just thinking out loud.

Update: PMA tool will not make a custom mandrel, and I tried some different bushing dies i have and still only sizes 80% of neck. I found a FL die and it is ordered.
