SK Standard Plus

I have an older box of SK Standard Plus that a friend gave me to try.. it is the older gold box stuff..
I am wondering how the newer black box stuff compares to the older.. is it the same?

Here is a pic as shot from my Rem 37 at 50 yards
SKStandardPlus1.jpg

The size of that inner circle is .252 inches

Recently bought a used 1903 Anschutz and tried the new boxed, SK standard plus (black and yellow box) Have shot a few very nice groups at 50 yards with them on the correct prone target. Very happy for inexpensive ammo.

It shoots great out of my CZ 455! I am sure there is better ammo on the market but the bang for the buck is hard to beat. Very consistent.

My understanding is that it is the same as Wolf Match Target.

Yes.. it is supposed to be the same thing.. but i was just wondering if folks are getting the same results from the newer stuff vs the older gold box.. that is what i am needing to know..

I have found that ammo shoots differently in each gun. The only way to find out if a given ammo shoots well in your gun is to try it. Even different lots of the same ammo will shoot differently. Since the ammo is old it isn't going to make a difference unless you have a bunch.

i understand that.. but that isn't the answer that i am looking for .. i am looking for someone that has experience with both.. and if they had in general an improvement, a worse or the same results between the two boxes.. i get all that other stuff

From my testing with a chronograph, the older ammo generally performed a little better but my sample size is too small to be statistically certain. There is a WIDE range of performance so it is luck of the draw; some pretty decent and some best suited for offhand practice. Wolf and SK are similar but not exactly the same; perhaps run on the same machines. Pulling bullets the powder and primer were clearly different, even within one brand over time. Funny how things become common knowledge.

The ammo will string together decent groups, but sometimes there is a flyer lurking in the box.

Thanks.. and if i may say.. what i found with the Wolf Match Target in the past was.. (not everyone subscribes to this).. but sorting by rim thickness help sort those fliers.. now, before your thinking further.. i didn't say or try to inject that sorting makes the ammo more accurate, on the contrary, it won't improve it at all.. but what i feel it does.. it puts all those "fliers" together so that they shoot in the same place.. you might have to "zero" your scope or irons for that batch of sorted ammo.. but there were less "fliers" from that sorted batch..

I shot only a small amount of the older gold box Std+, due mostly to the better availability of Wolf MT several years ago. But from what I've seen recently, the newer yellow/black box Std+ shoots about the same as the older stuff did. Pretty vague answer, but I don't have any of the older gold box stuff left to do a more detailed comparison.

Was shooting two custom barreled bolt rifles at steel at 200yds one evening a few weeks ago, one (Stiller 2500XR) with a select lot of SK Rifle Match that its Krieger bbl seems to like better than quite a few other lots I'd tested. The other is a 40X repeater (Mike Bush's design, executed by Jelrod) with a Benchmark bbl - was shooting Lapua Center-X in it. They were doing pretty well at 200, not at all difficult to keep all shots on 6" & even 4" gongs. Pulled a dedicated 22RF AR upper out (Douglas SS bbl done by Compass Lake Engineering) and tried it just to see what it'd do. The 1st lot of SK Std+ I grabbed out of the box containing several test sample lots shot every bit as good at 200 as the two bolt rifles had been doing, which kind of blew me away. So I followed that up by running a 10rd mag full of another lot of Std+, and wasn't able to keep all shots on the 6" gong. Would sure like to have a case of that first lot!

While I've shot a crapload (technical measurement term) of SK Standard Plus in the past decade +, I can't answer your inquiry directly. I can address a comparison (for my purposes) of SK Rifle Match from each packaging era. I don't spend lots of time with my rimfires on paper for group size. Whenever prepping for a silhouette match I do spend some time getting group sizes (and zeroes) out to 100 meters to ensure adequacy for 100 meter rams. My experience with the black box SK RM is limited compared to the gold box, but based on the lot I shot last year in preparation for the Tennessee State Smallbore match, black box performed as well as gold box from previous years' gold box.

You guys helped a lot with this, it helps me make a educated choice in ammo.. Here is the group from the Federal Auto Match that was shot on the same day, same conditions.. i didn't clean the rifle either.. Actually, i shot the Auto Match first then the Sk Standard Plus later.. (about 30 minutes)

Doc,
I don't know the distance you shot these groups (50 yards?), but if they're indicative of performance of each (and not the exception) and hunting is your intended use I would have to use the AutoMatch for its increased velocity. If it's 3-P or low dollar BR, my measurement tools would decide.

Boyd,
Not for huntin, wouldn't take my 37 in to the woods.. but i thought that i would dabble a tad in some ARA or IR50.. Nothing serious.. just want to have a lot of fun in the process.. so yeah.. looks like Auto Match for practice and maybe the newer SK for matches.. that is the line of thinking that i was flowing towards.

Doc

Edit: Yes, these groups were shot at 50 yards.

Brownells just had a sale on the SK plus, so I'm going to give it a whirl. I bought 1500 rounds to use in my new to me Finnfire and my son can use it for 4-H in my(his he thinks!)Model 41 and his 581 rem.

What gets me.. according to the website, if you buy 9 boxes of 50 or less, you get them at the price of 4.99 ea. But if you order 10 boxes of 50 or more, then the price goes up a dollar each box. And they call that "Quantity Discount Pricing"!

How much was the shipping?

Graf and Sons had the same $4.99 deal for single boxes of Standard Plus OR $58.99 for a 500 count of SK Magazine. Go figure......
$7.95 flat shipping (I think).
