SK Match ammo in a 10-22

I took a 10-22 to the range to zero it. Without thinking, I just took a couple of boxes of the SK Match ammo that had done so well in an Anschutz/Wby MK XXII. It was accurate in the 10-22 also, but extraction and ejection were very weak. About every 10th rd would smokestack.

It would save me some time and money if I knew what 10-22's liked and would cycle properly. The rifle is the heavy Rotoforged Ruger barrel with the brown laminate factory stock.

Thanks for any advice. Tom

No, but if I can't find accurate ammo that cycles normally, I will try a weaker spring.

Thanks, I hadn't considered changing the spring.

Tom

That's worth a try. The Standard ammo may be a little hotter than the Match. It wouldn't take much more energy to make the rifle work every time.

Thanks, Tom

If you haven't already done so, you might want to drop in over at Rimfire Central - lots of 10-22 folks over there.

I have a bolt gun so it may not be relevant, but Wolf match is more accurate than I am. Have also read good reviews on Federal Automatch, which is intended for autoloaders.

My custom 10/22 shoots Wolf Match extremely well... Maybe you could try that or SK Standard. SK Pistol Match Special is good too.

Buy several bolt return springs...Cut a couple of rings off...

assemble bolt and try ammo....If you screw up try again...It cant cost much and you end up with good accurate rifle..

Dogcapper, it's worth experimenting. I finally broke down and ordered a box of RWS-50, Fed Ultramatch, and CCI Green label, to try in the Wby/Anschutz and the Kimber 82G. I'll try them in the 10-22 hvy barrel also, as soon as I can. I may need to cut down a spring coil or 2, if one or more of them is a tack-driver.

Thanks, Tom

My vote is you go purchase 10,000 rounds of ammo and take your local scout troop/young adult group to the range and let them shoot all the ammo. Cant say that nothing will happen to the barrel but the gun will run much smoother by that point. Plus it is a bunch of fun. ;D

I got to the range last week and shot the SK again as a benchmark, then shot the Fed GMUM, then the Green Tag, and finally, the RWS-50. The SK was still good, as expected, the Federal wasn't, the Green Tag wasn't, and the RWS was even better than the SK. Not much over 1/2 moa at 50 yds. Not a real knothole, but all 5 cut each other. My scope is a 3 x 9 Burris with no parallax adjustment, and has visible parallax at 50 yds, so that probably opens the groups a little bit. I will put a more powerful scope on it, with parallax adjustment, when I can afford one.

I'm enjoying the little gun, which I found out is called the Target Model (except for cleaning it). Apparently a good choice for my first 10-22.

My 10-22 just loves Aguila Rifle Match ammo. I use Tech Sights and with that rifle/sight/ammo combination, I am definitely the weak link :o It is mid priced, IMO. Not at much as RWS or ELEY, but more than bulk ammo (about $35/500 rds.) You might give that a try.

Jnespappa, I'll try it. The SK is about $7 for 50, but the R-50 is about $17 for 50. Good ammo for $3.50 a box is definitely worth a try.

Thanks for the info, Tom

I have a 10/22 just like yours , and the best ammo for it is CCI mini mags . It shoots them into a half inch all day ! I was suprised , as I tested RWS , Eley , SK , Winchester , Remington and Federal high speed hollow points . It's a prairie dog gun . I have two , the other I converted to 17 M2 , it shoots 1/4 inch groups ;D ! The standard velocity ammo does not cycle well , you'll have to change springs .

LC, I've got a brick of the minimags. It'll be real easy to try them. Yeah, it looks like all the top match ammo comes in around 1050 fps or so. It is a little wimpy. The minimag is pretty stout. I've got my fingers crossed.

Thanks, Tom
