Sizing the base of the case

I have some 6br brass that I need to size the base of the case. I tried the 45 acp method & it didn't work. The old brass measures .469 at the base just above the extractor groove. The brass I'm trying to use only sized to .470 with the 45acp method.. It will chamber & when I fired it; it had a heavy bolt lift & click. It isn't a hot load. This brass is from another gun but only has a few firings on it.Don't want to scrap it. Would a Redding small base die get me down to .469?

Very possible that the brass has work hardened enough that it has a springy character and you would need to go a few thousandths (or more) under your desired diameter to HOPEFULLY reduce the base diameter. That brass may work great in someone else's chamber, just not yours. This is one downfall to running tight chambers. I have the same issue with a 6-284 Win. where some brass works great, others don't - and CANNOT use Lapua brass or any brass based on the 6.5-284 Norma.

As jr600yd stated above a standard .243, 308, 30-06 die should work and if not the a small base die in the same caliber might also work.

Just remember we live in a plus and minus manufacturing world, I have a standard .223 Lee full length die that sizes the base of the case more/smaller than a Redding small base body die or my RCBS .223 full length small base die. Meaning if you try one die and it doesn't work the try another. (.243, 308, 30-06 die )

I just measued my Redding 308 Small Base die body die, and it is 0.462". It will do what you want.

Bases do NOT work harden, and they are NOT springie... they come already hardened at the factory.

You size the base and it stays there, until shoved by lottsa pressure stuff!

Redding body dies are cheap insurance.

Thanks guys, the '06 die did the trick. Had to bump the shoulder back & trim afterwards but all is good. I'll anneal them & I should be good to go. Thanks again.

What in the world do you mean by this statement? Tolerances?
I think he is saying dies can really vary. My gunsmith told me he has 5 Redding Dasher dies and they all size differently. Matt

This is one of the major reasons Al Warner designed the most excellent dies he produces ;)

You can change the 2 inserts and size a completely different cartridge. The fit and quality has not been surpassed.

To add just a bit to that Butch, there is no other sizing die on earth that even remotely compares to the fit, finish, quality of materials, tight dimensions and craftsmanship.

Looks like a twin to mine 8)
