sizing down 30 cal. to 6.5 steps

How many bushings would be necessary to size down 30-06 to 6.5? I would like to size down some 30-06 brass to 6.5 then after necking down will fire form to 6.5 ackley. Just wondering how many bushing would be used. I have 270 win dies and bushing, and I might have 280 rem dies around some where. But I was wondering if I could do it with bushings and fewer dies as long as the were 30-06 familyThank You, Ron

I'm sure some one has done this! Was just trying to get this done with out going thru the trial and error.

You know the more steps you go thru the easier itll be but more chance of wrinkling and work hardening. 280,270 then 6.5 would be the route id go since you have that setup

Simply run .270 brass through your 6.5-06 F/l die using the sizer ball. (Edited to add: check resulting case length and trim as necessary.)

I typically run Hornady 7-08 brass through my .260 f/l die with the sizer ball. One pass and done. i see very little point to subjecting the brass to several stages of work hardening when simply one will suffice. I believe I saw some virgin Hornady .270 brass at my LGS yesterday.

Also, please note that the shoulder length on the .280 is longer than on the .30-'06 or .270.

I have a 6-06 but I use 270 brass I neck it down in one step using a set of forester 6BR dies run up high. If u use 270 brass u will need to trim about .020-.015 off the brass to meet the 2.494 case length of the 06 based case. I do that before I size the neck down.

You can use 30/06 brass as others have indicated. Much easier to use 25/06 brass, expand the neck with either a mandrel or expander ball then fire form.

I make 6XC out of 308 brass by running them first into a 6.5x47 body die w/o expander ball. Without pushing the shoulders back any the necks come out mostly straight with just a little belling at the mouths. If the die is set to push shoulders back usually one side of the neck comes out a little shorter than the others but as I end up trimming off about 0.070" anyway (and reaming AND neck turning) once necks are reduced to near 0.240" ID I'm not bothered by the deformation.

Thank You for the info. I was just thinking about using some of the higher end brass such as lapua And I think they only make 30-06. I have made it out of 270 mostly, Ron

I have sized 30-06 down to 25-06 many times with one pass.

if you are willing to buy the extra dies I would size it first with a RCBS .270 Win TRIM Die. A RCBS trim die is .010 larger in the neck than a RCBS FL die.

Redding Type S dies are very versatile for this chore.

Might go with a .306 bushing first and then go for .285 or whatever finished neck diameter you want for your 6.5-06. Be sure to lube your cases well with Imperial die wax for most reliable results.

One reason I use 7-08 brass for .260, instead of .243 is some talk awhile back about donuts being a possible outcome of the necking up process. i don't know, but using 7-08 may make the question moot.

I always run the brass through as many steps as possible I would go 280, 270 and then 6.5. I find they come out nicer when you do that.
