Sizing 22 CM to 22-250 AI

As the title states, anyone try to size a 22 Creedmoor to 22-250 Ackley? I just had my 22-250 redone in Ackley before I looked for fresh brass. None out there I can find.

Curious, if y'all are using 22 CM brass for your 22-250AI's, since those two are nearly ballistic twins, why go through the extra hassle, work, and cost of fireforming wouldn't it be a whole lot easier to just do a 22CM from the start??

Well that's a good question. For me, I never heard of the 22 Creedmoor until after I completed my 22-250 Improved. I think the 22 CM would definitely be an easier route to the same, or similar, destination.

Now that I think about it, it was the same with the other 2 Creedmoors, the 6 and 6.5. They had been out for years before I ran across rifles so chambered in the gun store. I had to go home and read up on them via the internet.

I am a happily largely disconnected person. I'm not a consumer of media in any form. I do miss a lot of things because of that :p

Technically when you run it through your fulling sizing die it's pretty well formed and done just need to trim the case neck down just a little bit

That's interesting because all of the cartridges that I have with "improved" or AI'd shoulders the overall length of the case/neck, shortens, when the shoulder is blown out.

Yes Sir that is correct if you look at the case dimensions on it technically the shoulder dungeon is a little bit higher than the 22250 actually so when you go to size it down it pretty much makes a nice little 95% formed case

Just to be clear before I invest a lot of money in brass!!
I can run 22 creedmore brass thru my 22-250AI body die and end up with 22-250ai brass (95%) which will finish forming with the first firing???

Yes, size, load shoot. ( watch trim length after sizing and before loading/shooting.

4 or 5 of us have 22-250 AI s and ours is slightly more complicated only because they re tight neck chambers and have to neck turn.

Familiarity? I have an Ackley rifle & dies already with no real use for the longer throat or quicker twist that may be built into the CM. My current rifle has a 14 twist & the next barrel will be a 12. I like the idea of a sleek 'splosive 52 or 53gr @ 4100+fps better than a 70gr+ @ <3600. Around here 500 yards is a fairly long shot & time of flight has a quality of its own.

Long before there was a .22 Needsmore I used 6XC brass to form .22/250AI cases. I did a partial neck sizing of the 6XC case using the .22/250AI FL die, creating a "crush fit" false shoulder and fire formed with a standard .22/250 Remington load. Done! Fire form load is accurate enough for prairie dogging or most other uses.

Ironically, I can find 6XC brass, but no 22-250...

What is the neck size yours are chambered to? I'm asking because none of my fire-formed brass is allowing a bullet to drop in the neck before sizing. Neck should be 0.255" according to the order. Brass neck thickness is 0.015"

The tight neck reamer our AI s and CM s are built off of is a .250 neck. We turn our brass and get the pre fired neck diameter with bullet seated at .247-.248. I personally go with the .003 or even .004 of clearance on mine; ran too tight with minimal clearance just a grain of powder or small piece of grit/carbon can stop the fun.

Unlike some of the guys I know who run .0015-.002 clearance and argue that it’s “easier” on the brass I like a little more clearance. Annealing your brass occasionally takes care of any so called difference of these clearances. (More than likely your primer pockets will loosen before necks start splitting. At least that’s my experience/opinion.
