Sizer Die Problem

Full length resizing 284 Winchester Brass and noticed scratches on cases. I’m OCD when it comes to cleaning dies so die was clean when I started sizing. Ran cleaning patch in does and fine specs of brass on the patch. I suspect they are come from case mouth. Fired case neck measures .316 and the necks are .304 after resizing. Wonder why they manufacture the die to size neck down .012? Seems excessive.

What brand of dies? Normal consumer off-the-shelf dies size small on the upstroke, then set final neck dimension as the expander is pulled back through the neck as the ram comes back down. Did you pull the expander from the die?

If you didn't do a light chamfer on the outside of the case-mouth before running them thru the die , that is possibly where the brass particles , and scratches are coming from . Look closely at even brand new cases , whether Lapua , Nosler , Win , Hornady , who-ever . Some will have a very slight burr on the outside edge of the case . That fine burr can break away and leave particles inside your die causing the scratches . It only takes One .

Don’t want to Post the name of die manufacture but it isn’t off the shelf make. I did chamfer 10 cases and still found small pieces in die. I have two full length sizers from the same company and tried the other FL die. I suspect there is and issue the first fl die. When case is run into it it feels jerky on the press handle. The other fl die has a nice smooth feel when case is resized. Expander was removed from both dies and both necks measure .304 after resized. I’m going to contact die manufacture about the die.

Redding replaced my 6br die last year for scratching my cases. I tried cleaning and polishing it but it is so hard I couldn't really do anything.

Loaded round is .313 and yes I anneal.
Sent manufacture email last night and woke up to email saying ship it to them

If you would like to send me the sizer body we can get it polished out a bit smoother.

tried several times to get a better picture but couldn’t. Looks a little ruff at the shoulder.

Jay,
That’s a good picture and it looks rougher that a Cobb!.... Hope they make it right.... I’m sure they will and that was very decent of you not to mention the name of die maker they probably make great stuff and it just slipped through. Everyone deserves a chance before there drug through the mud!... I would have done it the same way...... kudos!...

I had something similar happen a few years ago with a new die. The cases would come out small and "wrinkles" The die manufacturer admitted it missed being finished reamed and replaced with an apology, everybody is happy.

Look at the video below and the internal finish of all the dies. Then after watching the video ask yourself if your die has as good a finish as the Forster that costs much less than custom dies.

That shoulder finish doesn’t bother me. There is no sliding across that surface, unlike the case body and neck surfaces.

The neck sizing though is surprisingly large.

Received my 284 die back from the manufacture and I’m a little disappointed with them. I sent an email to them and stated the problem and they said to ship it back and they would polish it. I printed the email and wrote a note about the sizer sizing the neck to .304 and asked if the could open it up. When I opened the box the die was in the box. That’s it. I thought they would have included a note as to what the did. Don’t have any fired brass to size to see if the opened up the die.

Regardless of what they say they did, I would want to run some brass into the die, take some measurements and verify.
