single stage presses

Stick with the old RCBS Rock Chucker.. More solid and does not have the play in the ram/arms that the Summit does.

Rockchucker. Had one for years. Ran the clock over it recently and I cannot find any runout or wobbles anywhere. However - I also own a Dillon 550. Bought for pistol ammo a few years ago. I now don't shoot pistol competitively and I was using it to make 223 to feed the rattle gun, but since NZ elected communists to government, my AR15 had to go. I considered selling the 550 and getting a Forster, but decided to check out loading 308 and 223 match ammo on the Dillon. I'm very pleased with the result. The ammo, using Forster Benchrest dies for the 308 and Redding dies for the 223, has no more runout than a single stage. The primer seating is fine. No- I'm not using the powder measure - bought the powder die and funnel. Handy that I use BR4 primers for both calibres. The advantage is that I can load one complete round without changing dies or set-up. If I was buying another single stage, it would be Redding. Certainly not a Summit. I did have a look at one, but not impressed.

I do all my reloading on a Hornady Lock N Load Progressive. Just use it more like a single stage but for sizing I install a FL die and a Neck die opposite each other.
I have been contemplating getting the Hornady Iron Single Stage for doing some of the functions. It has a 1-1/8" ram and the construction is stout, appearing to fit to its name.

Do you guys realize you are rehashing a March 2019 thread?

It's called the mid winter blues.

I have reverted back to a Lee Classic turret. I buy a 15 dollar turret for each cartridge and put a sizing die and a seating die on it. Makes for fast changeouts and the little Lee does everything I ask of it. I keep my Rock Chucker under the bench in case I ever need something heavy duty

Anyone try the new Lyman press? First hand opinions are better than advertising. What about the included swagger?

I learned running the 2 press system from this site. My RCBS Jr2 handles all my dirty work ($30.00 from e-bay) and I work with Lake City brass. So shop around and buy what fits your wallet.

I've been using a single stage RCBS Jr. purchased in the late 60's to reload rifle and pistol. It's simple to use and I like simple. It's a strong press with an "O" ring design.

I stop using the primer feed tube 20 years ago and began using a Sinclair Hand Primer for more control and precision in priming.

I shoot about a 1,000 rounds of center fire rifle per year and about 1,200 rounds of center fire pistol. I find a single stage press perfectly adequate for my purposes.

it was superior to anything else for the money...back then I too had one from the 60's. There were two HOF brothers at the super shoot each year that loaded "on the job", as we do...shooting "group. They are heavy to lug around which is why I chose to use a Harrels. Same principle though... strait up and down ram. No movement either. Your choice of hand priming tool was also a good one. Benchrest Group shooters all use one type or another for that endeavor.

Always been partial to the Lee press for "light weight stuff" but when it comes to full length re-sizing I have to say I like the Rock Chucker RCBS best.

Limited to this selection, the RCBS is the average shooters choice for a reliable single stage press. My guess would be that there are literally a million of these out in the world currently and a hands down choice for price and dependability. You will not go wrong.

However...

When you decide that reloading is an integral part of your life and you want the best, look at Präzipress.

Yes these are expensive and take time to get here from Germany after you complete the paperwork but they are the best. I've owned nearly every single stage press made and multiples of a couple but this is the press I use most now. In fact I have the biggest press on order now to handle a couple of the ELR cartridges I'm working with. No you don't need this as a beginner, recreational shooter or even a top competitor but they are superb quality.
I'm almost sure there is one of these in my future! :D:eek:

I have 2 rockchuckers and have them dedicated to one gun each, I'm getting .001-.0015 runout on both so going to be pretty hard to beat.

Anyone bought the new RCBS Rebel press? Seems like a pretty nice evolution of the rockchucker.

I'm still using my grandpa's rockchucker from who knows when ago. 70s?

Ive got the Summit press and love it. I use it for everything. It’s big, heavy, and sturdy and doesn’t flex the edge of the bench like other presses have. It doesn’t even need to be mounted right at the edge of the bench. And yes, it will cam over. My only gripe is that you can’t use a case kicker.

Yeah...the Redding UltraMag press. I got one of the first 50 shipped from AcuSport when they introduced them new in 1986. Got it for $86.00 dealer introductory special price. Should have bought two.

The RS gets used for small scale rounds. I got that A2 at a yard sale 15 years ago......(you better sit down.):D The old gal had TWENTY bucks written on it. It needed paint, so I got it powder coated at my work. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

I did buy two of the Redding Ultramag. Was going to buy a third one but bought a Redding T7 turret and RCBS Summit instead.

Any Basic Cast Iron Press is awesome. Everything is price & budget related. If price isn't a concern just keep buying until you find your favorite.
