There is a thread that asks about the interchangeability of single base and double base powders.
I thought some history would be interesting for some folks so I did not hijack that thread but started this new one on the history of single base and double base powders. I will not define the difference here but just focus on the history.
I am working from memory so this may not be perfect so jump in if you have some historical facts (not opinions).
In the 1800s the Hercules powder company produced single base powders (nitrocellulose) and double based powders (nitrocellulose with nitroglycerin). In the early 1900s the US Government forced the company to break up under the Sherman antitrust law. So the company separated into Hercules (double base) and Du Pont (single base) and so they are today.
