sinclairs new rest

I had the old rest they made and quit making quite awhile back and it was very nice. I have had several different ones and for me it pretty much comes down to user preference and what you are looking to get out of the rest. Alot of nice rests on the market. Makes you wish you could go someplace and see them all lined up and play with them to see. I bought a seb rest about 2 years ago from a fellow here in Ohio that sold them and hands down is the best i have had and seen. I love it and last night i ordered the new one coming out. If you do not have the funds for one, i suggest saving a little longer to get one. I think you will be very happy .

Don't know if it's better than the JJ rest, but here are a few of my thoughts: It's hundreds less expensive, that's a plus. It 's base is steel so it will weigh quite a bit more. This could be a plus or minus depending on how much weight you want to lug around. E-mail Sinclair with a question you get a response. I e-mailed JJ weeks ago with a question. No reply. BIG plus for Sinclair.
I'd buy the Sinclair.

I sure don't want to be the first guy on the block to have a Sinclair.I would wait to see if it's any good, don't try to compare it to a JJ rest,it will not have the tolerance as with the old tripod base compared hart or big birds base and windage top. Sinclair did copy a lot of products and rest were one of them but they were very generous on there tolerance,so i think i would wait.
I hope i'm wrong and they are great for that money, they show they are sold out till the end of the month. If this is true some body has the first one's but i don't see anything on them.......jim

I would think the SEB would be a bit less pricey being built in Indonesia? But not so. Must be the falling dollar huh. Very nice rest ,But on a budget $760.00 is alot. Guess I'm getting frugal as I age.

A friend of mine who is a tool and die maker and works for a company that does a lot of close tolerance work said if the new SEB rest the NEO. would cost upwards of $2000 to build in this country........jim

I have 4 on order for myself & friends. I also have spoke to their shop manager on a couple of occasions. His statement is, that it is the finest rest Sinclair has ever made and it will be worth the wait. He is aware that I own 5 of John Loh"s JJ rests and will be making comparisons.

Now you speak with an air of knowledge. you say you don't want to be the first guy to have one. you say, it will not have the tollerances as the old one and go on to say that they were very generous on there tolerances. Specificly, what does that mean ?

The only one that has been released is the red presentation one that was given to the Hornady Co. At the Shot Show, The next one is going to the Super Shoot, and the next two are going to the NRA show.

As no production models have been shipped yet. I for one would like to know the detail's of where and how you aquired this negative knowledge about the new Sinclair rests ?????
John

I don't know how you guys say that you have them ordered since on Sinclairs website is says "Out of stock, no backorder"

?????????

Danny

You have to call them and they will put you on a waiting list. And on top of that, take the availability date with a grain of salt! They all have waiting lists...JJ, Seb, Farley...

I pre-ordered one today. While talking with Bob Blaine today these observations came up, so FYI

If you plan on using an Edgewood front bag you will need to order the longer mounting screws for the rest.

Extra post's and Hand wheels will be available so you can convert any current Sinclair rest tops that you may have to use on the new rest even if they are the windage tops that Sinclair sells. You'll just have the ability to use two different windage adjustments if you wish. This is great since I can just convert the post and hand wheel on my spare All purpose top.

They are planning on having these babies ready to go for the Super Shoot so the May 24th date seems for real.

As to the quality verses the JJ they were designed to be compared directly to the JJ. Sinclairs is pretty proud of this rest.

That's all I got for now.

Danny

John,
What I'm said was i don't want to be the first to own one. I would like to see one first. My friend called to order one and was led to believe the first shipment was sold out.The old rest, like a hart was very loose when unlocked and the windage top wasn't in the same class as the one big bird made.So i guess it boils down to what you can live with.
I understand that the last 30 JJ rest are to be made and shipped to Sinclair, then ill health will end that rest also, same as big bird what a shame, they did so much for the sport....jim

Guys--

Just spoke to John Loh.

#1 John is alive and well. :) There are NO plans to halt production of the JJ Industries rest. No health issues.

#2 There is no quota or limit on the rests John will be building. He will continue to produce them to fill demand. Price is $875.00 including an front bag.

#3 The new Sinclair rest is beefy and has some interesting features. But... be aware that it handles windage movement very differently than almost any other rest on the market. That may or may not be good for you... depending on your discipline and shooting style. Having seen the Sinclair at Shot Show, I can still say the machining on John's JJ rest is without peer.

#4 If you need to talk to John, the best thing is to call him on the phone -- he should get back to you right away during the week.

About the windage mechanism: the new Sinclair rest windage mechanism pivots the top on an arc rather than sliding directly side to side. The debate has always been about which method "binds" the stock less (make no doubt about it, both methods bind the stock). The answer is that one method does it more so in the front bag and one more so in the rear bag. The bottom line is that there is zero "noticeable" difference between the two methods, it's all personal preference.

To answer another issue brought up earlier in this thread about the compatability of the Sinclair rest top with Edgewood bags (particularly screw length) all current models of Sinclair Benchrest Tops now include the longer screws to accept the thicker bottomed Edgewood front bags, you will still need to order the Edgewood bag specifically for the Sinclair Tops because they have the holes pre-punched, but there is no need to order the upgrade hardware kit.

The new Sinclair Rests will ship this week or early next, so everyone who has one on order now will receive them shortly. There will be more coming through the pike, but demand has been significant, so keeping up with orders may have some delay. Do not expect to wait 6-8 weeks with these rests, but be prepared for up to a week or two.

I believe that with the pivot for windage some distance behind the front bag that front bag binding will be less than a sliding top, or one that pivots in front of the bag.

Good News:
Today I recieved my notification that Sinclair has shipped the first of the new rests. UPS. shipping shows that they will arrive next Wed. --- I'll be at the Super Shoot. Darn !
John
Update !!!
Sinclair shipped the first 25 of the new front rests yesterday.

I have two sinclair w/d tops one pivots on the forearm stop [gen 1 maybe] the newer one moves side to side were does the newist one pivot any pics out there thanks Mark

If people are talking about the gen 2 w/windage, I got mine about 1 month +/- ago. Very nice compared to the caldwell I was using. I have never seen a very expensive rest (>$500) so my only reference is the caldwell. Used it 2x and am happy so far.
