SINCLAIR NECK TURNER

Last night while foraging through my little visited junk cabinet I happened upon a new Sinclair neck turning tool that I'd bought 20+ years ago and forgot that I had it. Since Brownells doesn't offer replacement parts and I really don't need another 17.5 degree cutter, how hard would it be to re-cut it to 40 degrees to work with Ackley Improved cases?

Also the set screw to hold the mandrel in place is larger than the 10-32 screw used on the current NT-1000 model. Anyone know what size that might be? Same for the screw that moves the cutter; if there was one I can't find it.The threaded hole for it looks to be something on the order of 5/16.

Use your calipers to get screw size. Look at the fine thread equivalents such as 1/4 28, 5/16 24 if indeed "next size up.
Divide 1 by thread per inch(pitch) then x .866. This gives thread depth.
If 1/4 - 28 tpi is your suspicion,
1 divided by 28 = .0357
Multiply by 2 (each side represented)
.0714 added to your measurement w calipers should get you close to the nominal size of 1/4.

Depending on caliper jaws, your skill and thread crest flat, you may be (SWAG!!) .010 over nominal, in this case, 1/4.......so abt .260.
ANYthing around .250 will mean a quarter inch screw.

Or go to Lowes or the local machine shop supply house and they will do it. Easier to ask on the off chance that someone else knows.

If I end up using it I'd replace the set screw with a long Phillips or torx screw since I can usually get them to snug up better. I thought I had one set up earlier only to have the dang mandrel come loose when I was about 90% done.

I re-ground the angle on my Sinclair neck turner very easily to suit the 6.5x55 ackley case, can't remember now what I used but it cut very easily. Must have been getting on for 15 years ago and still using the same cutter today.
