gaboon,
Not speaking of myself, but the larger companies have shipping depts. and have to take care of their employees.

isn't that what their profit from the merchandise is for? I don't suppose they pay salaries and benefits from the shipping cost.

I'm obviously not talking to you butch. i am speaking of the large high volume shippers. one point i have is they are wasting a resource that could net them time and money. you see a small flat rate box is 5.95 dollars. they are free to the shipper and no tape necessary. of course they cost more as you get larger but that's a ~8.5"-5.5" box. now why does a company want to charge me 18 bucks to ship a die and a shell holder? well; because it comes to my house in a 14"x24"x10" box, with some air filled sacks in it, with my parts rolling around in the bottom. necessary? no. a small 6 dollar 3 day priority box would have been just dandy.

another example, ammo supply wants 15.90 to ship 100 22 bullet heads that cost 10 bucks. really? toss them in a small flat rate box for 6 bucks and i'll have them in 3 days. you could fit up to 1000 of them in there and they ship for the same price. buy 1000 at ammo supply the price goes to 21 dollars.

FWIW- I have received bullets and steel shot and other small parts purchased from the ads on this and other sites, and more often than not the flat rate boxes used were either broken or had the corners compromised.....the heavier the merchandise, the worst condition they are received. I have never received a flat rate box of any kind that was in good enough shape to re-use. (Yes, I know they're free, just making a point.) Knowing this, when I ship items I have sold, I tend to use the next size flat rate box and meticulously pack peanuts, bubble wrap, or even carve out a styrofoam block just to avoid a big clusterbuck with the buyer should items be lost or damaged. This is indeed time consuming. I also don't need the aggravation of filing claims with the shipper if I can avoid it. I can only think that is the reasoning behind their packaging methods.
It will only get worse when they start "drop" shipping with drones. :o

joejo,
I'm not disagreeing, just making a point. It may be that it is better to keep up with their accounting this way, rather than the putting everything in one basket in both income and disbursements. I really don't know how they do things, but they might check their actual USPS, UPS, and Fedex costs, shipping material cost, and the exact employee cost to help determine expenses. I'm guessing as this would be how I would do it. Do some company build profit in shipping, probably. Everybody looks at things differently. Some would want to be quoted a single out the door price and some want shipping billed separately.
I'm not covering for anybody, just pointing out a few things.

I don't care what they ship in I would just like to have my order after waiting 16 day's and no reply to emails.

Yes, generally speaking, service has dropped off over the last few years. Sometimes you get what you ordered in a reasonable time, other not. When I was based overseas for a year I saw their overseas service was not what we are used to.

This is a test..... I just placed an order with Sinclair, my first in a couple of years. Last time I ordered from them, the shipping was so outrageous, I said never again. Shipping today was $7.95. I can live with that. Now lets see if it's shipped via pony express or priority mail. Update to follow.

FWIW- The two products I ordered were both LE Wilson products. I could have ordered them from Wilson for a total cost of $174+change. $17.95 shipping.

Total from Sinclair was 134+chnage..... :o explain that one to me Lucy.

When you buy a product directly from a manufacturer who also has retail partners, they'll likely charge you full retail. Manufacturers do don't want to undercut their retailers, who are likely to represent the vast majority of their sales. If they were to sell their wares direct at the same price, their vendors wouldn't be able to be competitive and still make a profit.

When I want something, I shop around and go with the best total price, which includes shipping. Then I order it and I'm done with it. I don't question their methods or reasons for the total cost of merchandise. I don't pose the question of the why of the cost to them and I don't ask for moral support on a blog.

Well, aren't you special....

Not to let Gone kill this, I'm back to a thumbs up to Sinclair. Got my order Wednesday. I'll use them again.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I just miss dealing with the old Sinclair guy's, very knowledgeable, almost like they knew what you needed.. Gun guys. shooting guys.

I just ordered 270 bucks in bullets and brass from bullets.com .. ordered on Tuesday here on Thursday..GREAT.

I used to come home from a match on the weekend call Sinclair Monday morning and what ever I had broke or needed and they even maybe suggested some other items I needed and my order was on my porch on Thursday.

Unfortunately there is still stuff Sinclair has that others don't carry and brownells also has some items . so I will still need to order from time to time..

Brownell's (and Sinclair too, since they are the same business), really went down hill last fall. They moved into a new warehouse and changed to a new computer system -- both of which during the busiest time in the gun business. For several months, it was nearly impossible to reach them on the phone. Orders that were usually delivered in 2-3 business days were taking up to 10-14 days. I cancelled one order after 14 days and they could still not confirm shipping date (items WERE in stock). More items have been out of stock than ever before. The new computer system seldom sends out an invoice with your order, only a packing list without any prices or total. The phone service is back to normal; but shipping times, while better, are still twice as long as before. Out of stock is still a big issue and gun parts/accessories are not nearly the hot items they were a year ago when they were doing much better on filling orders. I have done business with them for over 30 years and frankly they are opening the door for competition.

Just received an order from Sinclair yesterday that I placed 16 days ago.
This is the second order in the last 2 months that took 2 weeks +.
They used to be 5 days from order to delivery. They wont need the larger warehouse if they cant keep their customers happy!

I don't know why these businesses wont start using or offer an option to ship by USPS flat rate shipping.

+1 million

you can stuff a lot of shooting tools in a flat rate box and ship anywhere for 6 bucks. I was going to order a die blank and a shell holder from another online shop, but they want 17 bucks to ship! really? it would cost no more the 3.50 for a padded envelope. and 6 for a small flat rate box.

I once considered ordering a single shot follower (3 0unces) from a smith. It was going to be $16 to ship it. I sent him a Christmas card and a SASE small padded envelope, with my check for the follower. I asked him to drop it in the mail with my christmas card...

I got the follower, no Christmas card and I have never gone back there, due to the stupid costs for shipping a tiny item.

Ok I shouldn't but im going to tell ya a story...First I would like to say I don't care about shipping cost unless you order a 4oz pair of custom scope rings shipped 5 hrs from where you live and get charged $35.00 shipping But let's not get into that one...ok story..I am going to bed a rifle have everything I need but the bedding compound I wanted to use. This is Wednesday morning.plan is to bed it Friday night after work be shooting it Saturday. I can not find this bedding compound anywhere. so I do find a place that has it in stock but only in the shop size package. I do not care I want to use this stuff and I need it by Friday..So I call and make the order and ask if I can next day air it..YES it would be like $48.00 to next day air it. so like a total of around $90.00..Ok can I get it..Yes sir you can. go though the order stuff bla bla bla..use credit card..so Thursday I get home from work nothing..Ah I figure some times next day air is two day so I feel confident it will be here tomorrow..so I get home Friday night and no package..I was freeken out...my weekend was ruined and it had not even started. So I get on the phone they answered and I asked what is going on with my order?????.... Well we are backed up with orders and it has not even shipped yet..WHAT!!! ... Are you Kidding me... well I said cancel the order then I don't want it..I needed it for this weekend that's why I next day aired it..so they transferred me to some one who could cancel the order..I was on hold for over a hour..so I hung up called back and could not get any one on the phone...so this goes into Monday , Tuesday. me trying to get the order canceled .. they told me the order had been processed and could not be canceled. so I said you better not charge me for next day air shipping. so they shipped it Thursday next day air and I got it Friday A WEEK LATER! ..I was so MAD I cant even explain How mad I was..I threatened to ship it back despute the charge on my credit card...But Im a busy guy and just don't have time for the red tape or the patience because every time I thought about it I got so mad I could not even think..so I threw the shit on the shelf threw the bill in the garbage blocked it out of my mind and went on with my life..

Yep, sometimes you're just scrawed, which I was told, is the plural of screwed and you can't do much about it except get over it.
I called a gun store, 90 miles away, once and was told they had the rings I needed in stock (verified by part number) and they'd hold em for me. I got in the pickup right then and made it down there quicker than the 55 mph speed limit allowed. When I got there, it seemed like a pretty decent little store. The guy behind the counter, who was the same guy I'd spoken with on the phone, was busy with another customer so I gathered up a few incidental cleaning supplies and made my way to the counter as the other customer left. I told the yayhoo that I'd called about some rings. He reached under the counter and pulled out a set rings exactly like I already had (Ruger D-71 not the D-71H that I had specified and he had claimed to have). He then proceeded to tell me that the Ruger rep had just left and must have taken them with him by mistake. I left his cleaning supplies on the counter but was still out the trip. A year or two later, I heard they went out of business and I couldn't help but smile but I still was basically scrawed on that deal.

Had been doing business with Sinclair going back over 25 years ago. As I see it not the same Sinclair today. My business has increasingly been going elsewhere. They canceled my .22 backorder after almost 2 years. That was the straw that broke the camel's back.
