Sinclair Competition vs 21st Century

I'm debating between a new Sinclair Competition and a new 21st Century front rifle rest. Currently I use an "original" cast iron Bald Eagle with windage top, but I would like to upgrade. I really don't want a joystick type rest. (not bashing them, just not for me) Have read alot about the Sinclair, but haven't heard much about the 21st Century. I shoot varmint matches for score out to 600 yards primarily, but might want to try 600-1000 yard IBS. All of my shooting is off of a bench. (no prone)

What does the 21st Century weigh ?

Do either of these rests have similar amount of elevation as my Bald Eagle ?

Open to ALL opinions please ! Thanks

My vote goes to the Fulghum rest made by Randolph Machine in NC.
Search Accurate Shooter for a comparison article a few years back.

You can operate the windage and elevation knobs on the sinclair without moving your hand. You could not give me a rest that I had to reach up to the side to crank a windage knob. At least in competition where speed matter. 21st century stuff is top notch so I am sure quality is not an issue.

I just got a Sinclair (thanks Alex). It is a superior rest for those who want ease of operation, and not willing to shell out the price of a new action for it.

I have looked at the Fulghum, but I'm not so sold on the belt drive. Just makes me think, what if the belt breaks in a match ?

GMan,
If I may, take a look at adding a JJ Rest to the mix if you are looking for a true upgrade. IMHO, a JJ outshines the others if you are into serious shooting. Just my .02 worth.

According to Steve at Randolph, this has never been reported to him as a failure.....I asked the same question before I bought mine.

Alex,

I just sold my JJ. It is the SMOOTHEST of all I have tried, but if you decide to attach a plate to the rest, you have TWO options to adjust vertical because the belt drive is not affected by the bolts used to secure the rest to the plate....can't use the speed screw of the JJ because the bolt replaces it. The plate has the same type of screws (3) that all rests have for vertical adjustment. It seems that every bench at Williamsport is different in height from the other, so this option for me is a BIG plus. My Fulghum attached to an inch plate weighs 44#.

I've got a Sinclair. I have no complaints, and I've found it can be used both off a bench and for F class, although it's better suited to the bench.

Gman,

Over the years I've had my share of front rests. I now have a Sinclair Competition rest plus a separate top, post, and Mariner wheel for the narrower forearms which making swapping them easy peasy. I like the Sinclair a lot, in my opinion it's a "Goldilocks" rest. Not to big, not to heavy, easy to switch from left to right hand operation, just right in my opinion.

Paul can't you use the speed screw on the back hole of the plate. My buddy used one in his Hart. It worked good. Actually I use just a regular 1/2-13 on my plate. It is plenty fast enough because it is farther behind so it lifts quick. Matt

Thx Paul! And clearly, without exception, the JJ IS the smoothest rest (without exception) I have ever tried using. And I am not trashing either of the other two mentioned by the OP. I guess in a way, I've gotten SPOILED by a lot of you guys, fellow shooters I shoot with and reading books on "PRECISION SHOOTING!' JJ rests and even many of the newer ones on the market, fit that quality and are "smooth" as well and very fine rests. Guess it boils down to personal preference and how much each of us are willing to spend for chasing "PERFECTION" in our sport. And rests are part of the equation and DO matter.

Matt,

The speed screw on the back of the plate is one of my two options to adjust vertical....the other is the elevation knob on the Fulghum that is "belt driven" and not effected by the rest being bolted to the plate. For me, two vertical adjustment options are better than one.

If I shot short range BR, I would have kept my JJ with two interchangeable tops. At 1000 yards, even with (2) risers in place, it sometimes was a challenge to NOT run out of vertical on the record targets. Maybe I need a rifle that tracks better!
