Sinclair competition BR rest

I have one and love it.
Pro's: stable, can adjust elevation and windage without moving my hand
Cons: none I can think of

At the Super Shoot, there was one on each side of me. Bob Scarbrough, Jr. on the left and John Mangus on the right. I was impressed with those two. Good shooting...James

There was one at our last match and I was not impressed and the "new" owner was looking for a buyer. It is well made, probably too heavy, but I also choose to stay away from the pivoting windage set-up. The Sinclair is the most egregious of the pivoting adjustments I've seen because it has a block, pivoting in the middle, with the bag pedestal on one end and the adjustment on the other, probably 4-5" apart. There is pronounced movement of the bag during windage adjustments and a bag as full and hard as mine would surely bind my fore-end. I'm well aware of different strokes for different folks and I certainly wish Sinclair well with their rest.

Thanks for the replies guys!!!

I wouldn't think that binding would be a problem unless you really cranked on the windage,
I'm more concerened with its smoothness.

I did a lot of mods. to mine first con is tolerance is too loose, the screw on the rise is too slow, replaced with a 1"-8 and wheel is too big, replaced it wit a Hart Throw the bearing away, works better without it and it stays tight. Windage screw is weak, replaced that. Speed screw was replaced with a new 1/2 -20 leg works much better for long range. put carbide inserts in legs. Now it is very stable and fast and it works very well at 1K....... jim

Just to point out a couple of things about the geometry involved with the use of windage tops....

I one minute of angle (a little over and inch at 100 yd,) adjustment, with the centers of front and rear bag contact 24" apart, requires about .007 lateral movement at the front bag (or rear, for that matter). If your target has multiple centers, that had an extreme of horizontal spread of say 16", and you set up your front rest so that your bag was perfectly square to the stock, when you were aimed at the center of the target paper, you would only be moving your front bag around 1/16" , at 100 yd., to reach the farthest target. This amount of lateral movement amounts to about an eighth of a degree. I don't know about anyone else, but I am not prepared to say that I manage to get my front bag aligned to my stock within that sort of tolerance. At longer distances the movement would be reduced proportionately, 1/32 at 200 yd. and so on. For anyone but score shooters , the lateral movement would be much less.

Another thing... If I were competing at a match, what I would really like is for all of the other competitors to become so obsessed with tracking that they were running rock hard front bags and a lot of side tension, that way they could win the tracking trophy, and increase the likelihood of my shooting the smallest group. Oh wait, there isn't a tracking trophy. My bad. ;)

Boyd Allen,

Thanks for the math lesson..I knew it wouldn't be much for group shooting, not so sure for other disciplines.

One of the first things I learned was not to run a rock hard front bag, I'm just a casual shooter with limited competition experience looking for a good rest that meets my needs, short range and 600-1000(I shoot left handed but I am a righty for everything else).

Boyd, If you don't think tracking matters,go to 1K match,if it don't track you don't need extra rounds for the shoot off.........jim

I didn't say that I think that tracking is unimportant, just that I think that accuracy is more important, especially looking at the size of current records. It would be best to have both, but if you have to do a little more aiming and get better accuracy...

Pacer -
I own one and use a Edgewood/Farley 3" front bag filled with Sinclair's Ironsand. I like this rest overall - I haven't needed to modify it and it's smooth enough. Both of my heavy 3" fore end BR's track well on it and so does my 13lb light gun. This rest is heavy - more like beefy - so I bought a pelican case for it and that's helped allot with getting it to the bench and keeping it safe from damage. I have never felt it bind at all. It's NOT a windage top like the Eagle's and Farleys. I've owned Eagle's and JJ's in the past and this one is better than the Eagle but not as refined as the JJ IMO. Get yourself some of Sinclair's 3" rubber/steel feet if you get one of these so you don't flatten out your spikes on concrete benches during load testing. I shoot 1K matches here in Colorado and tracking matters if you want to send all of your shots in the prescribed time - otherwise, you'll have 'leftover' ammo for the next relay...............
Good luck!

Boyd, I look for a barrel that will shoot in the wind and a stock that will track, but this year i can't find it.........jim

Pacer: I have one and I think they are worth the Money. I mainly use mine for Varmint hunting from a portable shooting table. I opted for the (Smith's Dairy in the Country) Case for Mine.

I have one and like it a lot. I've added Butch Lambert's Joystick top form Shadetree Engineering to it, and like it even more!!!! No worry about binding for left right adjustment. She just slides left to right as smooth as glass.

Shooter 2112, which Pelican Case did you get for yours? After looking at them on Amazon, I'm more confused about them now than when I started looking at them.

Ken

I guess your correct it's not the Comp rest. I would like to see a picture of one of those and the shadtree joystick top.
