Since today, my son insisted on buying a mighty .30/06 Springfield

Okay, so now I will handload .308 caliber bullets into a SUPER-LONG brass case. I fire it once with 150 grain factory-fare, and decided this was too much recoil for me. He seems to love it. I ordered bullets and dies yesterday for the potent .30/06. My first loads will be: 165 grain Nosler AccuBond bullets with CCI 250 primers and 58.0 grains of H4350 powder. This seems a fairly basic load, and I'm open to suggestions. Cliffy, new to this high-power caliber. Cliffy

Well if you are looking for reduced recoil loads, Hodgdon website list a series of reduced (youth) loads for centerfire. I make 308W reduced loads using H4895 with 125 Nosler Hunting bullets from the load table of the website right at 2700 fps. Very accurate and minimal recoil. They have a very similar load for the 3006. Luck, Tim

If you are looking for full power loads for your son, I have had great accuracy from 59.5grs of RL19, CCI 200 primers (CCI mags work just as well) and 180gr Nosler Ballistic tips which give me MOA accuracy which is about all my gun is capable of. I have had similar results from a similar load you are going to try.

If you are looking for reduced loads, the info Tim has given you has given me some loads my girl can tolerate.

Good luck with your new purchase. I have always loved the 06, it's probably the most versatile 30cal. going. It will shoot big heavy bullets, and lighter stuff as well. I also have some screamer 110gr HP loads written down in my log as well. I will dig them up if your interested.

The standard 30-06 load that has worked for years with a 165gr bullet is pretty close to what you are loading. 56 to 57grs of H4350 has always been the best if it won't shoot thar it probably won't shoot anything.

The 30/06 is probably my most favorite calibre in a rifle. I have several in fact. As Kenny 474 stated, you can load just about any 308 weight bullet, and it will shoot accurately. German Salazar is a huge fan of the 30/06, and has written numerous articles about it. Go to his website, and research his past articles. Here is the link:

I'm currently working up some loads for testing with 168 to 190 grainers with RL17. I'll report back when I have some data.

Good Shooting

Ah the great 30-06. My elk load, 180 gr Nosler Partition, Winchester brass and LR Primer. Winchester 760 powder 54.0 gr. Right from the original Nosler Reloading Manual. I get 2,716 fps from a 22" Ruger 77 at 4,700 feet altitude. Results 3 shots 3 dead elk. The recent Hogdon Magazine Reloading Guide has an excellent article on reduced loads for practice in high powere rifles using Trailboss. Hope this helps.

I used a 130 Hornady for rapid fire match shooting. IMR 4064 is a fantastic powder for the 06, It may not get that last 20 ft/s but it is accurate. It is a pain to measure but it was worth it for me over IMR 4895. Less powder means less recoil for the recoil sensitive people.

Cliffy - you're on to a great load there. Hodgdon published a good short article on how well H4350 works in the .30-06 several years ago. I've had no complaint at all, and am using that same load myself, with the 165 gr Nosler Partition instead, or often the old Nosler Solid Base bullet.

Depending on the rifle, somewhere around 2750 - 2800 fps should be expected, with excellent consistency. I'd hunt deer, elk, black bear, hogs or moose with that combo. Am loaning my '06 to a new hunter this fall, and he'll be using my ammo, loaded with just that combo on our mule deer hunt.

Regards, Guy
