Silhouette Shooters Advice?

I am fairly new to this but find it fun.
I held a friends Anschutz 1416 .22LR
and the light weight/balance felt wonderful.
The thumbhole model seemed well suited.
Now it is replaced by the 1761.
Anyone find a rifle better suited to Silhouette?
Other suggestions?

Unfortunately, a thumbhole is not permitted.

Stock: A hunting style stock; thumbhole-type stocks are not permitted. Attachments, either removable or permanent, are not permitted.Swivels and slings are permitted, but slings may not be used for armsupport in shooting. Dimensions may not exceed those described in3.1(d).

Anschutz 54 based models are excellent for Silhouette. That is what I have. 64 is certainly ok to get started.

If the rules seem pretty arbitrary, it's because they are. LOL Most of the rules were created to prohibit a specific 'angle', someone trying to gain an advantage.

I would encourage you to go to a match and find someone there to guide you.

There is an excellent group of people shooting Silhouette in Pe Ell, Washington. I can probably get you a name and phone number.

Check out Handy link to NASSA site and Handy link to Steel Chickens smallbore forum.

I never shot Hunter Rifle, only Standard, because I did not like the 2.5 lb trigger and the scope height limitation.

Get set up with a Natural Point of Aim. Meaning don't twist your body to move your Aim, move your rear foot until you have natural Point of Aim on the Silhouette Target.

Oh, I liked and used a Weaver 6-24 x 40 variable scope. I would use a lower scope power on the closer targets and Dial Up in Power as the distance increased.

I have a CZ 452 Silhouette. Not fancy but a decent inexpensive rifle to get started shooting silhouette with.

I loved the 40X in an Anschutz Silhouette stock from Mcmillan. Or a 64MS. Not sure either are still allowed by the rules.

There's a lot to unpack here, so let's take it from the top.

Most clubs will be happy to have new shooters and will let you shoot with whatever you brought, regardless if it meets the rules or not. That being said, if you want your scores to count then you'll have to get your equipment to meet spec.

Silhouette has two rifle classes; Standard rifle and Hunter rifle. Standard gives more leeway, Hunter is more restrictive. A thumbhole 1416 probably would qualify for Standard, but not for Hunter. Most people set up one Hunter rifle and shoot it in both classes.

No company currently makes a complete rifle that is great for silhouette. The ergonomics of the stock specifically for off-hand shooting just isn't available outside of Olympic-style rifles (which don't meet silhouette rules either). You either have to find a generic rifle that doesn't fit great but is acceptable enough, or you have to get one of the silhouette-specific stock makers to make one for you and have a gunsmith drop in an appropriate barreled action, or buy a used silhouette rifle that's already been built.

Hope that helps put things in perspective. Silhouette is a great sport and I highly encourage you to give it a go. Like I said, most clubs should be very welcoming and helpful to get you started.

Yes, this configuration is allowed. McMillan designed this stock specifically for NRA Rifle Silhouette.

I have one of these stocks with a Stiller Predator action. I went to McMillan a few years ago to get another one for my Anschutz but the new owners had destroyed the left hand mold. I think they still have the mold for the right handed version.

If you haven't seen this it will be a good read for shooting silhouette.

wow now there is whole lot of great information! Thanks!
Today I pasted a 1" orange target sticker on my ARA target
and took five shots at it. hit 3 of 5.
