DAY 2:
Wife went to a wedding shower, twins were off doing what twenty-somethings do, so I got the day to myself.
I broke out my Superior #7 22 PPC and decided to burn up all my groundhog loads. They shoot ok, but not as good as Berger match. Besides, it was a compressed load of Varget and I want a change.
The great unwashed were out en mass today. Steel 223 landing everywhere as young and old alike rained death on the hillside. Only two boltguns to be seen...a Ruger American and a Savage Axis, both with package scopes. I set up Old Yeller #3 and waited for a clear to hang my target. I use rows of IDPA target hole stickers. They are about 3/4 inch...ish..square, and the corners make a nice hold spot for the 36 Weaver dot.
No windflags, though I used a sumac on the hillside behind my target for direction, dust from the other guys impacts to get an idea of conditions and the occasional cloud of Black Powder smoke (yes, a muzzle stuffer was there) to get the "near' conditions. Reference target below. I shot about eight groups similar. I got burned by mirage and a few switches, but the groups were fun. An AR guy started talking with me (nice guy) and he was having trouble hitting a reduced size sillouette (a 100 yard 600 I think) at 100. While he watched, I shot the upper half of a one inch dot out of his target for him with the PPC. we had a little talk about "not being able to miss fast enough to win". I tried to draw a smiley on a fake dime about the size of my hand, but got burned once by mirage and twice by a sudden "from behind" wind that raised POI one to two bullet diameter. (But I am keeping it around, so I can tell everyone my 22 Creedmore will shoot inside a dime at 1000 if I do my part!)
After a nice evening shooting groups, I went to the graveside of my father, mother and sister. My sister was stillborn and never named. After my mom passed I had a marker added, and named her Grace. It was the first time I saw the marker today, and I had a long sit and talk. It was a beautiful evening, with mourning doves flying, crickets chirping, sun glowing. It felt right to finally have a name to call my only (would be) sibling. Im sure had she lived I would have been a better person for knowing her. But as it is, I will wait for the reunion at the right time.
Today was a very good day.
