Silencing the great unwashed

So I got a new Sig 320 RXP with Romeo Sight. Being new to the Sig, I took it to the local public range to index the Romeo to the sights (or get it near, as it turned out). I only had 50 rounds to fiddle with, so I set up a backer and a shoot n see. Reference the target below.

Note that 17 (first mag) started high and worked down, first left, then right, then centered. You can, if you are of the mind, count them. They would be the ones OUTSIDE the big hole in the middle.

Then I fired the remaining two mags. It got boring not seeing holes, so I started aiming at the edge of the hole. Ya, it was that accurate. I didn't shoot fast, but not slow either, about 1-1.5 seconds a shot. See dot, squeeze.

When I was done, I noted an eerie silence around me. The five "gunslingers" (one with a paper bag holster) were all standing still, looking at my target, not shooting, not talking. I took my target down, and went home.

I smiled the whole way.

Tough crowd tonight. Don't pay them no mind, Snert! They haven't had their Saturday night bath yet.

I witnessed a similar experience at an indoor pistol range with my then girlfriend Yulia, a Russian who had competed in Biathlon. She was shooting my S&W model 617. I left my lane to go get some more ammo. When I returned a couple young male Glockers (who were lucky to get their shots somewhere on a 18"x24" silhouette at 25') were strutting around trying to impress her. They were trying to act macho.

Then with her bullseye target at about 12 yards, shooting single action, she put all 10 rounds in an area not much bigger than a quarter. They got quiet real fast.

One then asked, dumb-founded, "How'd you do that?" In her cute Russian accent, she said, "Oh I just do this", making a "V" with two fingers of left hand and holding up index finger of right hand, forming front and rear sights... "It's easy."

Yes my GF was blond with blue eyes, and CUTE. This is definitely NOT her, but you get the idea. This is champion Gabriela Soukalova, Czech biathlete.

I was remiss in not putting a distance in my narrative. No Josh, it was 1000 yards...its a new 9mm Creedmore!

Joking aside, it was about 18 yards...ish. Public range, ya know...typical distances like 7, 10, 15 , 20 and 25 are lost on the designers. It was more than I wanted to shoot given the Romeo was just screwed on and no attempt had been made to zero it. I'm glad I used a backer of cardboard, as my first rounds went high right. Then after my "adjustment", lower, but still high, and way left. Then way right, then centered, then down a teensy bit and we were good to rock.

I was just off-handing, so to speak, and trying to get used to my first red dot type sight. I prefer irons, but this is what the higher-ups decided we should have. Whatever. The gun is nice. It would be WAY better with a Glock grip angle. Just my personal perfected opinion...

I wish I could ski and shoot about a tenth as well as the biathlete women can. Too bad that sport is basically unsupported in the US. I would have loved to been able to get involved when I was in my 20's. Not to mention the cute women!:D

They dont sell snow machines or have snow plows where i live so i guess we would have to rollerblade :p
I sure wish i could have done it though. I havent missed it in the olympics

I live in Reno, less than a hour from where the 1960 Olympic biathlon course was. You can hardly see the remnants of the shooting range there, not sure it was used since then.

I couldn't agree more! I saw all those bare legs and knees and immediately envisioned asphalt rash the potential sprains or broken bones.:( Snow and Ice can be hard on your body but nothing like asphalt or concrete when you're dressed in shorts!o_O:eek:

A great story Snert. Its always good to quietly out do the usual "gunslingers"
I had a similar experience many years ago. Again at a local indoor public range, I and my 10 year old son Colin were enjoying ourselves. Both of us were shooting 1911s with target ammo. (200 swc 3.8 gr Bullseye) There was a group of perhaps 3 young men blasting away 2 booths left of us with the usual 10 yard shotgun patterns. Colin, with each shot stepped back a little bit which the blasters thought was hilarious - - - - - - -until he reeled his target in, with a ragged hole in the middle. Then a silence came upon them.
Never underestimate the skills of a youngster especially if he has been shooting pistols for several years with his dad (a seasoned bullseye competitor) training him.
Today, 30 years later, Colin shoots that same 1911 much better than I can.

I’ll tell a story. About 20 years ago, I was invited to a gathering of my wife’s relatives from Dallas. They had a ranch in east Texas for hunting and (more to the purpose) drinking. The second night there, the guys said they were going to set up some targets and shoot pistols in the morning. “Would I like to join them?” I said sure, I’d love to. I was a bit nervous as these were “Texans”and I didn’t want to embarrass myself. Family honor and all that. The next morning, we all climbed in the trucks and went to a field with posts at one end. They nailed some man sized silhouette targets to the posts and set up a table for loading and unloading the pistols...............15 feet from the targets! !?! o_O I sat on a tailgate and watched as they loaded, walked to within 10 feet of the target and opened up. 8 to 12” patterns were the norm. I couldn’t believe it. I relaxed. My turn came and I borrowed a pistol. It was a Beretta Storm in 40 S&W. I loaded a mag, told the group to move back , paced off 30 feet, turned and shot a couple rounds to get a feel for the gun. Then I let fly with the rest of the mag and printed a 3 inch group on the “head” of the target. Family honor in tact, I handed back the gun to it’s owner.

What the guys didn’t know/remember is that I had an under ground pistol range at home. They didn’t know that I shot about 500 rounds a week to stay sharp.;)
When I got back to Delaware, I started to look for a Beretta Storm in 40. I found a nice used one for $500 and bought it. It’s one of my favorite guns.
I learned something that day. Just because you’re from Texas doesn’t mean you can shoot. ;)
Now, that was 20 years ago. I sold the house with the range and downsized to a much smaller house. I don’t shoot pistol as much as I did and lost my proficiency. My hat’s off to you, Snert! Ya still got it!

You got that right josh. I`m at a class at Blackwater 2004? Two bros. from Texas show up and with my prompting and some help from George Dickel, they told anyone that wanted to listen about their long range ability. Next morning we confirmed that some stuff is truly BS.They had more excuses then the neighbor that just got looking in your window. 500 yd. group that covered half of Moyock,NC. Take care down there. Things still suck in DE. Jeff

Yup,nothing funner than producing when the experts are watching.

My story isn't nearly as nice as blonde, blue eyed Olympians.... but was a proud moment.

I was at a pretty "hip" gunstore, range south of D.C. back in the early '80's. Used to kill time there when first married to limit time with a particularly nasty mother in law who lived there, near enough. Instead of hanging with wifey when visiting up there. Like Josh,I was slinging serious amts of ammo on a home range with a pretty healthy inventory of highend handguns, and deep $$ from contracting BK(before kids).

An older FBI agent comes up to me with his 3" K frame fixed sight 38. With a little smirk he hands it to me and goes,"try this". Put my GC down and give his weapon the once over, sayin it probably isn't gonna shoot to my p.o.a..... another smirk. Then rip off a cylinder full of + P into a ragged hole @7yds,and sure enough it's exactly where I'd mentioned it might hit.... say,2" "out" at 2:00.

Just as quickly as the group was shot, flicked the Smith cylinder open and handed it back to him, sayin the action felt sweet or something to that effect. Not sure what was going through his mind at that point but body language suggested.... civilians aren't supposed to shoot that well as he doesn't say anything and sorta backs away. Lucky group? Sure
