sightronIII 6-24X50 in low light hunting

Sorry; can't answer your question, but would also like to hear some feedback on this question: anyone out there has used this model for hunting?
J.K.

JK and JW, I will relate my experiences on this subject. I have tried my Leupold 6.5x20 in low light hunting conditions, plus my B&L 6x24 and 6x18 power scopes. They are simply not great at gathering light at dusk and dawn. I tried them while deer hunting and IMHO, the highest power variables which gave me the performance I was comfortable with was the 3.5x10 and a Leupold 4.5x14. I own and have used a half dozen 3.5x10x40 Leupolds and one 3.5x10x50 Leupold and could not see the difference the larger objective lens produced.

Back in the early 80's, I attended a sport show and was told by a Leupold representative that when using the 3.5x10x40 under low light conditions, to turn the power down to about 6.5 to 7 power and that's where they collected the maximum light. And it worked for me. Hope this helps. RR

If you are really young your eye will dialate to approx 8mm. This tends to decrease with age.In your late 50s,60's it is probably around 5mm. If you can see very well at night with the naked eye then yours probably dialates to 7mm or more.
With optics many factors come into play. The quality of the glass, coatings and design all play a significant role. That being said it we are comparing apples to apples a top quality opticaly devise will give you about maximun usable light with a 7mm exit pupil. How do we figure out exit pupil? Easy, divide the true objective diameter, no stated) by the power.
ie. if a scope has a true 56 mm objective it will give you maximun usable light gathering at 8 power or lower. If you turn the power above that you will start losing perceived light.
So, if you are going to compare scope fairly you must set the lowest objective diameter scope so it has atleast a 7mm exit pupil and then bring the other scopes to the same power. This is the only legitimate way to compare. I kept this a brief as possible. I am sure many of you already knew this info..

Thanks for the input mates; however, still no further to our main question.
* I got my anwer on the 'Western Shooter' web-site: it gives a good test-report on the above scope and even tried em out in last light.
He could still clearly see his bullet-holes,.30 cal.) at hundres yards on a paper-target, while his buddies cheaper-end scope couldn't even see the paper-target itself anymore?
That sommes it up, I guess?

I have the SIII in 8-32x56.
I just went outside to check it out. 10:00pm pacific with a moon but cloud cover. I put it on 8 power and if there was a hog in the open you could shoot him easy. I don't have the lighted reticle but it would be handy to have.
The Sightron is as clear as my Nightforce and works very well in low light. You won't be sorry with the choice of the Sightron.
Talk to Larry Scott,greatscott144@yahoo.com) he will get you a great price and provide awesome service.

I will second that on Larry D.Scott. You could find a better guy to do business with.,GREAT SERVICE THE LOWEST PRICES AROUND AND FAST SHIPPING) One of the good old boys from Western KY.

I use a Sightron SII, an older one,3 years) It is now their Big sky. I took an old 6-18x40mmAO off and put the 4-14x42mmAO sightron on. Now my .308HB is an effective hunter and 700 yard shooter. Great in low light or at night w/ a good moon. I put a Sightron on a Browning BLR in .308 that I picked up, great scopes.

I had a look through a Sightron 8x32x56 with the intention of comparing it to my Swaro 6x24x50. We were shooting at about 600 yards.

The eye relief when the Sightron is wound up is absolutly critical, there is no way I could use it personally so just have a look through one before you buy.

If like me you are getting on a bit an intend to use it,or a Luepold) in low light then just have a look through the German Ziess and S&B stuff. NXS is not that bad either, on a par with the Swaro.
