Sightron SIII 8-32X56 in mildot or FCH?

I've decided I'm going to go with a Sightron SIII 8-32X56 for my 600 yd competition gun I'm building, I just can't decide on mildot or FCH?

Which one do most prefer and why?

Thanks.

Trevor

Also...I see this scope advertised for 70 MOA internal adjustment, 1/4 MOA adjustments, is that 35 up, and 35 down? If so I would probably need a 20 MOA rail to be able to get enough up elevation adjustment for 600 yard shooting, correct? Do they make a Sightron in 8-32X56 with 1/8 MOA adjustments?

Check out the link. Yes they make both 1/4 and 1/8 Moa adjustments. A bunch of reticles as well.

Yes that 35 up and down when the scope is centered up and yes that is why almost everyone i know uses a 20MOA base.

Mil Dot is my last choice for any reticle... Except Mall Ninja stuff.

I take exception to this advice. The advantage of the mildot reticle, aside from being able to use it for ranging objects and determining distance based on size of known objects, is that it can provide holdover points for much faster shot deployment than dialing in the comeups, and the intermediate holdover points can enable you to shoot and score hits after your scope runs out of "up", and you can use the left/right dots for windage holdoff.

FCH reticle is fine for one thing: very precise aiming. If you want something more versatile, then FCH would be MY last choice in reticle. ;)

As to the idea that 70 MOA may prove challenging for you to dial in a 600y zero, that is ludicrous. Unless you're shooting a cartridge with the ballistics of a .45-70 and the BC of a meatball, then you'll likely need 15 MOA at most to get to 600y from a 100y zero.

Even so, if you're intending to shoot long range, then it's not a bad idea to use a forward canted base (e.g. 20 MOA taper), to enable you to get more usable adjustment range out of your scope. Just don't tilt it too much, or you may not be able to get a short range zero, which could prove maddening.

He's trying to get into FClass shooting. Meaning "very precise aiming" and shooting at 600yards and 1000 yards at fixed targets at fixed distance.

FCH and DOT.

So no Mall Ninja tacticool stuff needed

Ok, last question.

Would a 6-24 power be more than capable for 600 yd but maybe not quite what I want for 1000 yd? Not sure If I'll be doing any 1000 yd shooting this year, but I might I guess.

Most Fclass guys are using MUCH more glass than 32X power nowa days and I believe this will be the bottom end. Going down to 24 isnt going to help i believe. Its not uncommon to see 42 and 50X scopes on the line nowa days. Might as well go for the bigger of the two and have and not need it vs the other way around.
Im pretty sure you will never use the lowest setting on either scope at 6X or 8X either. I know your trying to save some money and have a tight budget for scopes based on a previos Thead. The 32X will serve you well for shooting F class.

Hope this is helpful

Nate, My appologies that jab was unwarrented. I was in a foul mood watching the news about gun control. No need to take it out on a fellow shooter.

As you can tell im not a big fan of the Mildot. I have used some for many years now and find the system to be lacking with todays other and better options. In this case with Trevor using his rifle as a Target rifle i believe it would be best to use and deploy a Target scope.
My Tacticool M24 Clone has one on. And we are still using them overhere in Afghanistan so there is a use. Im thinking maybe not as much in this case and purpose.

Again my appolgies sir.

IA Shooter,

RTheurer gave you good advice. Precise aiming & an uncluttered view for F-Class in my book anyday.. Even in all my hunting scopes I like an uncluttered view and prefer basic crosshairs.. I use my swaro rangefinder to determine distance and the skills I learned in F-Class to "dial" in my measured distance... This is not to say mil-dots dont have their place, but I sure as heck dont know any serious F-Classer with a mil-dot scope. I do know a few who had em and got rid of them tho... ;)

Good way for a beginner to get super-frustrated is to try to remember which hold point/hashmark/mildot you were holding off on in the middle of a competiton... ::)

In short, keep your viewing window clean and uncluttered, so sayeth a believer in the Oracle's advice.... 8)

I'm looking at the SIII with the target dot reticle that's for sale in the forums here. Looks like it's a 0.125 dot on full power and that scope has the 1/8 MOA adjustments and is smaller than the mil-dot from what I understand?

Read about the specs on Sightron's website. You gotta start figuring out what this stuff means, so you'll understand what you're getting into. ;)

Here's a good deal on a FCH, given that's what you've been instructed to purchase by that fella with wishy-washy opinions.

Hi Trevor

Any reason you went with 1/4 MOA adjustments vs the 1/8MOA?

RT the Oracle. :o

Because it was readily available at the right price more than anything. ??? The next one I buy for my 6MM Norma build will be a 1/8 MOA. ;D

And.......the more I thought about it I figure the 1/4 MOA will be fine for me for shooting 300-600 yards.

Sounds good. Main thing is to get out there and shoot. Saw your post with the rifle and new Barrel. I bet your stoked to get started this spring!

VERY stoked! ;D My next project I'm undertaking is building my reloading/hunting/fishing/man cave room in the back 1/2 off my garage. It will be a 10.5' X 15.5' room with a workbench, a reloading bench and some cabinets, etc and a closet. I plan on starting the project next w/e possibly.

If you want a "real" good deal on a scope, go here.......... http://www.bigsupplyshop.com/ I wish I had found it a few hours ago. I could have saved myself about $70. :-[

Oh well, maybe I can save someone else a few bucks. ;)
