Sightron SII illuminated, too bright

I have an older (estimated 15+ years) Sightron SII scope 3-9x40 with the illuminated reticle. It's been a good, solid scope, but my one complaint from day-1 is the fact that even on the lowest power setting the illumination appears too bright, especially if using it at night on coyotes. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution other than using partially worn-out batteries?
