? Sig 556 Classic

have not owned one of the 223 auto's, of any variety. am considering one now.

not compitition, just shooting for fun 100-300yd. and to have arround.
price preformance compared to other off the shelf "factory" not custom or "put together" rifles

what do any of you have to comment about the latest version of the Sig 556 Classic, i know the earlies had some problems but understand that is history now.

Thanks for your comments
Bob

They are a little on the heavy side, but they are built incredibly well and shoot great...if it's a Sig it's a winner.

I've had a 556 Classic for a few years. They're fun shooters and very reliable, but fairly loose and not terribly accurate, although I have not tried to find a load for it, mostly because it beats up on brass pretty good. The trigger is not bad. The collapsible stock is not as solid as I would like. The Swiss stock is good, but will run you $160-ish. The factory iron sights are too high, and the real Swiss sights will set you back about $700.

I prefer the AR-15 platform, but I keep my Sig around because it's something different.

Thanks for your reply, a question

Dboyles, "a few years" indicates one of the earlier versions, what accurcy are your getting and what ammo

Madderg, is yours the later version and what accurcy with what ammo,

Thank both of you for your input, as i understand it they made upgrades about 2 years ago.

What sort of upgrades were made a couple of years ago? I believe I purchased mine in the summer of '09.

It's been a while since I did any accuracy testing, and it just has irons on it now, but I seem to remember 2 - 2.5 MOA with Prvi 75gr match ammo. That was after I sent it back for questionable accuracy. Sig replaced the barrel and gas block to correct whatever the issue was.

My son just got one and I have to say it is a nice rifle. Shoots really good, under moa with 55 grn ball. Recoil and muzzle rise are less than an AR. I prefer the Sig folding stock to the collapsable. So far functon is what you would expect from a Sig.
