Sierra's New Tipped SMKs

I saw the recent announcement from Sierra that they are introducing a new line of Sierra Match King bullets with plastic tips.

22 and 308 are the initial focus right now.

David Tubb did this several years ago and the results were not so good. In fact, they withdrew the bullets from the market. One issue was that the tips on delivered bullets were not installed concentric, some tips fell off the bullets in the box, and overall quality control of the tips did not meet prototype expectations.

I wonder if Sierra has modified the tip material, installation process or packaging so that the above are no longer an issue.

Also, is the 155 gr 308 tipped projectile based on the 2155 or 2156 design?

Should be interesting to see just how the new bullets measure up to the other two bullets.

And David Tubb thought he had done his homework on the 6mm, 117 gr. tipped bullets too.

Didn't quite work out that way once they got into production.

Stay tuned.

It was an issue with the Tubb bullet (Tubb's own design), but Sierra has been making tipped bullets of Sierra's design for a loooooong time, with outstanding success.

The only time I have seen a Sierra bullet with the tip missing, is when I bought some blems. Funny thing is that the ones with the missing tip shot great. I just sorted them together.

you are right sir, found some of the tips crooked and a lot loose in the box. Maybe it was a planned thing by the co. ;)……. jim

The Tubb bullets were made by Sierra!

I will grant you that they have been making their varmint bullets with the tips for some time so hopefully, the bugs have been worked out of the process.

Next question is price?

But they were made the way Tubb told them to... I spoke to a Sierra engineer about them at a Shot Show a while back.

Tubb told Sierra how he wanted it done - he paid for them, so Sierra did what he wanted.

The tips will be great if they are straight …… if not more fire forming bullets and it is funny they didn't have a 6mm tipped or a 6.5 or a 7…….. sounds like it may not be good enough for bench rest or F class. They only come out for disciplines with big targets…….. jim

Aren't these about the same concept as the Hornady A-Max except for green instead of red tips? Some folks seem to have had pretty good results with the A-Max.

So....this will eliminate the need for pointing and trimming meplats . Curious indeed. The proof will be in the X count!! 8)

I think they will get around to it, but tying to keep up with production. I think they probably picked the most popular bullet in their line to start with. Matt

They also have some of their bullets coming pointed. I know the 6mm 107 was one of them. My buddy shot the new pointed ones in a Dasher and said they shoot really good. Matt

It is the same pointing as they did on the DTAC115, but i did trim and point again and they were considerably better….. jim
