Sierra Reloading Manual.

Hi again all.

I am just wondering if anyone can tell me if the latest version of the Sierra reloading manual (V 5) have load data on the 180 grain Bergers for the 284 Win.

I am looking to purchase it but if they do not have the info I will wait till they have updated it.

Cheers

Crackers,
I am not trying to be a smart ass but why would Sierra have load data for Berger bullets?....
Wayne.

Sorry, Yes I should have said 180 grain, not specific to Berger. (I had just been watching a Berger Video.)

Thank you for pulling me up on that.

Looking at both the 4th and 5th Sierra manuals for the 284 Winchester it looks like IMR 4350 is THE powder. The 4th list the 170 gr RN bullet. Start load is 43.3 grs IMR 4350 . I would start there with the 180 gr bullets and work up slowly.

The Hornady 7th has loads for 175 gr bullets. It list RL19 and WIN WMR as getting top velocity.

RL-19 start load 39.8 grs
WIN WMR start load 45.0 grs

Check out the Hodgdon powder web site. My old Hodgdon book list 175 and 195 gr bullets so you could split the difference.

I just had a bright idea duuuuuu. Call or e-mail Berger and they will give you load data for their bullets.

The only GOOD Thing about Sierra #5 is that you no longer have to buy a separate book to get handgun data.

Sierra 4 and #3 had more rifle data and BC charts in them, plus more instructional articles on loading for match and longrange. Why Sierra don't deem it necessary to even list the water capacity of case used in data development is just one bitch I have with them. Another is not listing the BC and Sectional Density for their bullets on the data page. Not like they don't have this data; they just don't figure you need it...

Why Sierra can't offer on-line updates and provide data for ctgs released since the book was composed is another thing. They donate $15k worth of bullets to the Palma Team but can't do a decent job on their $35 manual? Notice how many of the writeups are the same from previous manual, and how pithy and plain dumb the comments are?

Whatever happened to Berger's loading manual?
Just glad I got a Hodgdon's #26 on my shelf, plus last editions of Barnes and Nosler. Used to rely a lot on Hornady but haven't upgraded their book in many years. Damn shame, they've brought us more progress than any other American bulletmaker.

Also no load data for the 6.8 SPC but a quick email to Sierra got me all the information I could use. They ended up sending me about 5 pages and a Thank You for asking. ;)

The last Sierra book is missing several cartriges, even the 243 wssm. The good new is email or call them they will send you a PDF version that you can cut and put right into the book.

+1

I have my Barnes manual out now as I was researching load data for 7mm Rem Mag and they have good data for a 175GR TSX FB for the 284 Winchester.
IMR 4831 is near the greatest velocity and also has the greatest accuracy. Their minimum load is 47.0 at 2276 fps and 50.5 at 2454fps(105% load density though).
Thought this might help.

Ammo guide has several loads for 175 gr. bullets, one for the 180 and couple for the 195 Barnes. The 180 gr. bullet load is with RL17, by the way, RL-17 makes the 284 a whole new animal and puts it at 7 mag factory loads. Dave
