Sierra Load data for 223 bolt gun 70 gr to 80 grain

Hey guys, I have Lee and Hornady loading books, just curious about Sierra TMK SMK bullets in the 70 to 80 grain range for 223. Looking for powders, if anyone could help me out, I would appreciate it.

A lot of good powders to use. I've used Varget, 8208, R-15, H4895 with 77 and 80 grain SMKs and they all performed fine.

I use Rl15 with 77gr SMKs, but it is for an AR rather than your bolt; but I suppose the powder will be very good, just able to run a little hotter in yours.

The 69 gr. TMK's have a longer bearing surface so start a bit lower on charge weight than your SMK loads.

For 80 grain bullets you'll need a 7 or 7.5 twist barrel in the 223. My 8 twist 22-250 will shoot the 80's fine but are going a lot faster.

Thanks to all, my search did not turn up those PDFs so thanks for the pointer. That is exactly what I wanted to see. I am buying some RL 15 and was thinking about RL17 for my Valkyrie but wanted to see if it would be a good powder for 223 and heavier bullets. Not seeing that, so may pass on the RL17 for now.

Why don't you call Sierra. They have a Tech line and have always been very helpful to me.

23.3gr RL15 with a 75gr or 77gr bullet mag length for an AR.

Or the same load with an 80gr bullet a little bit further out into the chamber for a bolt action or single loaded in an AR. I'm using a 1;8 twist used Savage barrel for my 80gr loads and it loves them.

Several manuals claim this charge to be an accuracy node.

Buy a Sierra manual... It's worth it... Can't have to many manuals... Their working on a new one right now but no word on when it will be coming out...

I have found RL17 to be optimum in the 223 case for bullets 75gr and above.
When RL17 first appeared, the Canadian long range rifle association explored it's use in the 223 with bullets up to 90gr. They found practical velocities in excess of 2900 fps in 24in bbls loaded to AR pressure limits.. I found the article published via one of the popular online magazines, but can't remember which. They provided load data. I suspect that velocities in a long barreled bolt gun exceeding 3000fps would be possible.
I almost bit on the Valkyrie hype before I found this article. Fortunately, I also recognized the major inherent advantage of the 223, namely availability of superior Lake City NATO brass.

That’s my load I use shoot 1k yard steel out of 25 inch bolt 2861 fps as per magneto speed. Amax not suited for mag length though
Rl15 23.3 grains 75 Hornady Amax

Now that I bought a 223 bolt gun, I may end up selling the Valkyrie upper but it is an interesting gun and I thought it might be a runner for some of the PRS type shooting events but just like .38 super pistol, I am not keen on having to always pick up that expensive brass! I will get some RL17 as well as some RL15 for my 6.5 Creedmoor, thanks for the info and if you happen to find that article, send it my way.

The article was in the Spring issue of the member publication from the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association. I'm going to try to attach it here as PDF.
