$54.99 for TWENTY (20) rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor (140gr) or 20 rounds of .308 Win (168gr or 175gr).

That is $2.75 Per Round.

How do we mere mortals get onto something like this?

I've posted on Peterson Cartridge to help with their development, never have heard back from them.

I think a case can be made for the price if the cartridge cases are of known high quality, and they are as accurate as the best hand loads. But I looked at the website and could find nothing about what powders, cases, and primers are used. does anybody know what components are used?

The cases are federal, the primers are probably federal as well but it is hard to tell as they have a sealer on them. The 6.5 Creedmoor is using a small rifle primer and the 308win is using a large. I will see if Sierra will disclose the powder but most manufacturers will not.

MatchKings are well respected across the shooting community, of course. But they are far from the only - or, arguably, even the best - bullet out there. And since Sierra does not manufacture brass, primers, or powder... it begs the question of what secret sauce they think they've put into this ammo that justifies that price.

Maybe they've come up with a bunch of mythical one-hole wonders. More like, though, is they've concocted some very good, genuinely premium ammunition that - on a good day - might compete with decent handloads. For some, no doubt, that's good enough. But I daresay that many of the members on the forum here could easily best it with just a few hours at the bench.

I wish Sierra well. But I'm inclined to remember retailers and manufacturers who took advantage of us during these cyclical shortages that we seem destined to endure.

What is it with Midway these days? For the volume they purport to do, you’d think they could be reasonable with their prices.
It looks like the whole shooting industry is using this “shortage” as a reason to jack
up prices, that will never go back down.

As far as factory match ammo goes, last weekend at a Palma match, a new shooter was shooting IIRC, Federal 308 with 175 SMK’s the SD’s at the target was 8.2, pretty good for factory ammo.

Sierra may be gouging for a few $$, but one thing to keep in mind: Sierra's primary customers are distributors and retailers, who will be very cross with them if they think Sierra is undercutting them with direct to consumer sales. Sierra may be willing to put some stock direct to consumers, especially to gain some goodwill, but is unlikely to be selling them for less than recommended retail price. They may even be contractually obligated to do so.

$54.99 might not be a "good deal" but it's a price that's in line with what you would often pay for "match" ammo in a store, pre-pandemic.
