Sierra 85gr. HPBT

Good morning all........ Looking for commentary regarding the Sierra 85gr.HPBT. Performance, good, bad, accuracy, seating depth ??? Using Varget. Better all around powder ?? Chucks to deer is the goal. One shot, one kill. Remington 700 .243 Winchester being the caliber.

Found the 85 HPBT Sierras to be very accurate from my 6mm Remington and very effective on Rockchucks. I didn't try them on anything bigger than coyotes. Not as "explosive" as the 75 grain varmint bullets, but a good bullet that seemed to carry well downrange.

When I was looking for a one-bullet to do for both varmints and deer in the 6mm, my best results came from the various 100 grain soft point bullets,Sierra and Remington are my favorites) driven hard, or the 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. Either way varmints & mule deer were dropped easily. The heavier 95 & 100 grain bullets perform very well on deer too.

For example, my son shot a mule deer doe at 275 yards with the 95 grain ballistic tip. It entered her chest, clipped the heart, destroyed a lung and shattered the off-side leg when it exited. She collapsed immediately. Can't ask for better performance than a quick one-shot drop and also very good accuracy.

The same 95 & 100 grain bullets do a fine job on rockchucks and coyotes.

The partition will of course give better penetration - but as I've seen, the ballistic tip can give complete penetration, leaving destruction in it's wake. The ballistic tip also tends to be a very accurate bullet, whereas the partition is not generally quite as accurate. Not bad, but I've never had them shoot as well as the b-tips. Those ballistic tips often rival production grade match bullets for accuracy.

I'd go with the partition if the deer were large, heavy, and the shooting was anticipated to be at relatively close range where the velocity is still high.

Hi i have used them in a 243 for years at 3250fps. The 85gr HPBT is an awsome projectile i use it for small deer and feral goats they perform so well it is hard to change. I will not use them for medium deer as they are not heavy or strong enough for that use go to a good 100gr projectile and you will be verry happy the Sierra and Hornady interlock are both verry good bullets for deer in a 243 at 3000 fps with H4831SC or H1000. and i use H4831SC for the 85's.

HI
Found the speer 85 SPBT with a BC of .404 held it energy better and penetrated and left larger holes on ferals.
Was overkil on rabbits and foxes if you wanted to salvage meat or skins.
Worked very well under the light on the large hoppies we have over here, permit work).
