Sierra 85gr. HPBT

Good morning all......... Looking for commentary regarding the Sierra 85gr. HPBT. Performance, good, bad, accuracy, seating depth ??? Using Varget. Better all around powder ?? Chucks to deer is the goal. One shot, one kill. Remington 700 .243 Winchester being the caliber.

Cool........ Thanks for the insight. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Maybe the Nosler partition would be a better choice for deer.

Stick a 95 grain ballistic tip in your 243 and start dumping deer DRN.
D= dead R= right N= now
The 85gr Sierra BTHP is a lot iffy on deer sized critters, and always will be.

I've had just the opposite experience with them and consider them in a 243 to be a very good deer round....shot several and my buddies use them too, on Midwestern deer...does running 150-200 and bucks running 200 +.
Most all dropped in in their tracks, except one...ran 50 yards or so...penetration was excellent with several exits.

I shot a doe and a buck with the Sierra 85g BTHP, and both of them ran 50 yards when shot through the lungs. I prefer the 95g Partition, needless to say.

+1 on the Nosler Partition, but don't over look the 85 gr NP. A little flatter shooting, but same terminal performance. If the deer do run off, there is a lot of blood trail to follow. My fiancee even followed the trail from the deer she shot, and she even said she had no idea what to do except follow all the blood.

I've shot many, many Pennsylvania whitetails with the Sierra 85 Grain HPBT,.243 Win. @ about 3100 fps) and never lost one,from 30 yards in the woods to 250 yards or thereabouts). Hit em' in the ribs where you get heart and lungs and they run 40 yards and drop just like with an '06 or 7 mag. I might say I'm very particular about the shots I attempt. . . . I simply pass up marginal shots.

Good luck,

note: 87 grain Horn. spire points also work quite well

Seewhat 89, I tied the 85g Nosler partitions and could not get them to groups well. If you found a load that shoots well, I'd love to know what it is!

Thanks, Keith

I have shot 32 PA deer with a .243. Most were with a Nosler 100 grain partition. Six or so with a 100 Hornady Spire point. Both work very well. Why use a bullet lighter than 100 grains in PA when we don't get much long range shooting?

last fall i used a 6br, with a 75 v-max, on a deer, just to see how the bullet would perform. i was pushing them very fast. shot a smaller deer and it was awesome! the deer still ran about 40-50 yds. it was a ribcage shot and went completely thru. fist size hole at exit. took heart and lungs out. i would have no hesitation at this point using a 85hpbt on a whitetail unless i were to travel north where they are much larger deer and longer shots. then just put it in the ribcage. i had used a 6.5-284 all season long at that point w/ 140 sbt sierras, they all ran just at far, some even shot thru one shoulder.
