Sierra 6.5/ 155 HPBT and 160 SMP

Found some 6.5mm Sierra 155 HPBT and 160 SMP bullets at my local gun shop, in the old cardboard boxes.

My reloading manual lists the 160 SMP but not the 155.

How old do suppose these are and why did they discontinue them????

I'm going to use them for HP Silhouette on the rams.

Thanks

Good idea if you have a fast enough twist for them (Mauser twist was 1:7.8"). Federal used to offer a match load for the 6.5x55 using the 155s but discontinued them more than 10 years ago I believe. For your purposes they should work great! Load data for the 160 should be close, do the usual work up. I would bet the thinner jackets of the Match bullets would allow slightly higher charge weights (again, if you need it).

Sierra discontinued the 6.5 155 gr probably 15 yrs ago. Never could get them to shoot worth a ]{} Guess know one else could either.

TOO MUCH SHANK BEARING SURFACE. HARD TO GET VELOCITY WITHOUT GENERATING HIGH PRESSURES. MY 155 VLD, I'VE BEEN TOLD STABILIZES IN AN 8 TWIST AT 2600 FPS AND WITH LIVABLE PRESSURES.

Using the 155 HPBT that Sierra discontinued, my Remington 700 with a 27" Hart 1-8 twist barrel I shot a 198 7x target at 600 yards 1st time out with the rifle. That was my third match of the day and the 1st two were not to bad. I had to make a few adjustments to the sights and sling but figured it out, with the help of a highly experienced shooter, before the match was over. The caliber is 6.5x55, velocity was 2250fps and I used VitaVouri N550, The bullet was seated to 10 thousands off the lands. I love that bullet and I have 1250 left to work with.
