Sierra .224 60 Grain Tipped Match Kings

I just ordered some of these.

I plan to use the .224 60 gr. MK's against rodents with my 7.7 twist .22-.250's, 26 inch barrels. Planned powders include on-hand H414, CFE 223, IMR 8208. The Hodgdon data gives velocities above 3,500 fps with 60's at about 61K psi with these powders. CCI 200's will be used.

I called the Sierra folks and they gave me a thumbs up for my plans. The OAL for the 60 .224 Tipped MK is .910. My Miller Sg, calculator modified for plastic tips, comes up with 2.8 (3500 fps, 85 degrees). On closing the Sierra guy said, "have fun".

Any other members using something like this combo with 60 gr .224 MK's? I normally use Hornady's but they don't have a zippy 60 gr. expanding, pointy boat tail bullet. I want to flatten trajectories and get more expansion than 68's & 75's. Max ranges will be 500-600 yards. My 7.7 twist rifles are just OK with the much shorter 53 VMax bullets.

My 22-250 with 26" 12" twist cut rifled Muller works bbl shoots bug holes with those bullets . 34.9grs of Varget( Haven't chrono'd that load yet) ,next powder will be AA-2700. Also ordered a couple of boxes.

I agonized at some length over a 7.7 or 9 twist but settled on the 7.7 because of a stash of 75 Amax bullets that are now long gone. Bullets are gone but rifles remain. Always looking for an ideal bullet for a variety of purposes.

Running the Miller Sg for the same bullet (60 Si MK), same other stuff but with a 12 twist I came up with a Sg of 1.18. I used a plastic tip length of .13. I am told the Miller stuff is only an approximation - nothing like shoot & see. My old .22-.250 with a 10 twist shot 68's into one hole with a Sg of about the same, 1.18. The caveat being cold temps & heavy air.

Hopefully, no gray smoke stuff at 3500 fps with the 7.7.

12 twist ? Sierra says 10twist or faster on the box. I want to try them in my Tikka 223/12 twist and i was afraid they might not stabilize. Sounds as though it might work.

I’ve shot 60g STMK over 24.4 grains of Varget with a Rem700, .223, 1/9 twist, 26” barrel. The group was .67” on a mostly, horizontal spread. Seated .020 off the lands. I think I could use a little more speed for a 1/9 twist, so I may try CFE223. Did not chrono these yet.

Maybe came out in 2018 IIRC, just picked up 300 from Midway, free shipping, good price. Arrived today, loading tomorrow in my AI. Should be fun, I’m thinking 3400 from a 30” 1:8, we’ll see what the magnetospeed says...
